投子大同禪師。僧問如何是空王殿。師云建立不得。
Master Toutou Datong. A monk asked: "What is the Palace of the King of Emptiness?" The master said: "It cannot be built."
雪峯存禪師。僧問如何是空王殿。師云大小。云如何是空王佛。師云是甚麼。
A monk asked Zen Master Xuefeng Cun, "What is the Palace of the Empty King?" The Master said, "How big is it?" The monk asked, "What is the Buddha of the Empty King?" The Master said, "What is it?"
雲門偃禪師。僧問古殿無佛時如何。師云梵音何來。
Master Chan Master Yunmen Yan was asked by a monk: "What about when the ancient temple has no Buddha?" The master replied: "Where does the sacred sound come from?"
南堂靜頌云。古殿無佛。梵音何來。夢中喚省。樓閣門開。靈光一點絕塵埃。耀古騰今徧九垓。
Nan Tang's verse says:
In an ancient shrine without a Buddha, Where does the sacred sound come from? Awakening the dreamer, The tower doors swing open.
A single spark of spiritual light, utterly free from dust— It shines through ancient times and the present, spreading across all realms.
南院顒禪師。僧問古殿重興時如何。師云明堂瓦插簷。云恁麼則莊嚴畢備去也。師云斬草蛇頭落。
古德頌云。縱奪之機安可測。隨言生解實堪悲。曉來一陣春風起。吹落庭前三四枝。
德山鑑禪師行脚時挾複子到溈山。直上法堂上。從西過東。從東過西。顧視方丈。溈山不顧。師云無無。便出去(雪竇顯着語云。勘破了也)。師至門首却云。也不得草草。却具威儀再入相見。纔跨門。提起坐具召云和尚。溈擬取拂子。師便喝。拂袖而出(竇云。勘破了也)。溈至晚問首座。今日新到在不。座云當時背却法堂著草鞋出去了也。溈云還識此人麼。座云不識。溈云此子已後向孤峯頂上盤結草庵呵佛罵祖去在(竇云。雪上加霜)。
When Master Deshan Jian was traveling on foot, he arrived at Guishan's monastery carrying his bundle. He went straight up to the Dharma Hall and walked from the west side to the east side, then from the east side to the west side, staring into the abbot's quarters. Guishan paid him no attention. Deshan said, "Nothing, nothing," and started to leave. (Xuedou Xian comments: "He's been seen through.")
When Deshan reached the gate, he thought, "I shouldn't be so careless." So he composed himself and went back in to pay his respects properly. As he crossed the threshold, he lifted up his sitting mat and called out, "Reverend!" Guishan reached for his fly whisk. Deshan gave a shout and swept out of the hall, his sleeves billowing. (Xuedou says: "He's been seen through.")
That evening, Guishan asked the head monk, "Is that newcomer who arrived today here?" The head monk replied, "Just now he turned his back on the Dharma Hall, put on his straw sandals, and left." Guishan asked, "Do you recognize that man?" The head monk said, "I don't." Guishan remarked, "In the future, that fellow will make his home on a solitary mountain peak, cursing buddhas and scolding patriarchs." (Xuedou says: "Frost on top of snow.")
五祖戒云。德山作賊人心虗。溈山賊過後張弓。徑山杲云。二尊宿恁麼相見。每人失却一隻眼。雪竇顯頌云。一勘破。二勘破。雪上加霜曾嶮墮。飛騎將軍入虜庭。再得完全能幾箇。急走過。莫放過。孤峯頂上草裏坐。 上方益云。偷營斫寨入中軍。應是機謀已十分。袖裏金鎚猶未動。山前飛騎去紛紛。 海印信云。虎穴深林人不到。到者還須是獵人。老虎睡驚纔舉目。瞥然跳出獲全身。 佛鑑懃云。德山老。能法戰。一喝聲光吼雷電。騎虎頭兮收虎尾。捋虎鬚兮真可羨。急走下山三十里。又被溈山追一箭。
The Fifth Patriarch Jie said, "Deshan's heart was uneasy, like a thief's." Weishan said, "Drawing the bow after the thief has already fled."
Master Jing Shan Gao commented: "When these two venerable masters met like this, each of them lost one eye."
Xuedou Xian's verse says: "First, pierced through. Second, pierced through. Snow on frost—a perilous fall, cruel in its pursuit. Like a flying cavalry general entering the enemy's camp— How many return fully intact? Hasten past—do not let him go! At the lone peak's summit, sit in the grass."
Shangfang Yi said: "Storming their camp, slicing through forts—entering the enemy's own command. Clearly, their schemes were complete. But the golden hammer hidden in their sleeves had yet to stir— Flying cavalry swarmed before the mountain."
Hai Yin Xin said: "In the tiger's den deep in the forest, no one steps— Those who do must be hunters. The sleeping tiger, startled, lifts its glance— In a flash, it leaps out, whole and free."
Fo Jian Qing said: "Old Deshan! Skilled in dharma-battle! With a single shout, his voice roars like thunder and lightning. He grabs the tiger's head, seizes the tiger's tail. Plucking the tiger’s whiskers—truly something to admire! In haste, he flees down the mountain thirty miles— Still, Weishan shoots after him with an arrow."
雪峰存禪師示眾云。望州亭與汝相見了也。烏石嶺與汝相見了也。僧堂前與汝相見了也。後來保福問鵝湖。僧堂前且致。望州亭烏石嶺甚麼處相見來。鵝湖驟步歸方丈。保福便低頭入僧堂。
Chan Master Xuefeng Cun addressed the assembly, saying: "At Wangzhou Pavilion, I have already met with you. At Wushi Ridge, I have already met with you. Before the Monks' Hall, I have already met with you."
Later, Baofu asked Ehu: "Leaving aside the Monks' Hall, at Wangzhou Pavilion and Wushi Ridge, where exactly did we meet?"
Ehu quickly walked back to the Abbot's quarters. Baofu then lowered his head and entered the Monks' Hall.
東禪齋云。此二尊宿會不。是相見不相見。試斷看。雪竇顯云。二老是則是。只知雪峰放行。不見雪峯把定。忽有箇衲僧出來問。未審雪竇作麼生。豈不是別機宜識休咎底漢。還有望州亭烏石嶺相見底衲僧麼。良久云。擔板禪和如麻似粟。 薦福信云。古人與麼。只有順水之波。且無逆風之浪。寶林遠云。雪峯是三處相見。保福以兩處問人。鵝湖只解把定不解放行。若有問寶林。烏石嶺望州亭甚麼處相見。攔腮便掌。待伊擬議。拽拄杖打出三門。且要與雪峯流通此話。
汾陽昭頌云。望州烏石與堂前。相見相逢萬萬千。唯有鵝湖并保福。此時相見解推遷。 海印信云。望州烏石常相見。何故禪人却背違。保福鵝湖雖得意。理兵曾未展鏘旗。 佛眼遠云。密密堂堂早二三。本來無物更何堪。癡人見了生歡喜。作者相逢滿面慚。 徑山杲云。望州烏石與僧堂。業識忙忙不可當。提起衲僧拄杖子。五湖四海沸如湯。大洪遂云。登山過水幾區區。特地相逢問道途。堪笑華山潘處士。長安路上倒騎驢。
雲居簡禪師。僧問孤峯獨宿時如何。師云。閑却七間僧堂。誰教你孤峯獨宿。
丹霞淳頌云。法爾非修本十成。平常酬答最分明。端然指出長安道。無柰遊人不肯行。
