Temples and Stupas

Master Shushan of the Ren School was informed by his steward monk that a commemorative pagoda had been built for him. The master asked, “How much money did you give the craftsman?” The steward replied, “It’s entirely up to you, Master.” The master said, “Did you give him three coins? Two coins? Or one coin? If you can tell me, you’ve built the pagoda for me personally.” The steward had no answer.

Later, a monk arrived at Daling, the teacher who is Luoshan, and recounted this story. Daling asked, “Has anyone been able to answer that?” The monk said, “No one has.” Daling said, “Go back and tell Shushan: ‘Daling says: If you gave him three coins, you will never get that pagoda in this lifetime. If you gave him two coins, you and the craftsman are working with the same hand. If you gave him one coin, you’ve burdened the craftsman so that his eyebrows and beard will fall off.’”

The monk returned and told Shushan. Shushan, in formal attire, bowed from a distance toward Daling and sighed, “I thought no one understood. Daling, an ancient Buddha, has shone light right here. Still, this is like a lotus blooming in the twelfth month.”

When Daling later heard about this, he said, “My very words are already a turtle’s hair three feet long.”

Fushan Yuanyun said, "Shushan used an awl to pierce the earth, and Daling used a knife to carve the sky. Even though these two ancient teachers misapplied their awl and knife, people of today still cannot grasp their meaning. Why? Because the later statements contained both a hook and a killing stroke. Nevertheless, 'If you lose money in the river, you must retrieve it from the river.'"

Yuanwu Keqin said, "True practitioners of all directions share the same practice—a thousand paths lead to the same goal, and a hundred rivers flow to the sea. Master Chen Zunsu often said, 'I, an old monk, have only one sword. Beneath this sword lies the intention to kill, yet also the path of transformation.' Watch how he wielded and cut—it's wonderfully multifaceted and radiant. If not for Shushan's measure and insight, how could we perceive the resounding jade and vibrating metal? For instance, when he said, 'If you give him three coins, this venerable will never obtain a stupa in this life; you cannot work without reward. If you give him two coins, the master and the craftsman work as one hand, inevitably dragging mud and water. If you give him one coin, it burdens the craftsman, causing his eyebrows and beard to fall off—thoroughly unapproachable by water.' Shushan remarked, 'This is already a lotus flower in the twelfth month—a vast, sparsely populated land.' Daling said, 'This is already a three-foot-long turtle's fur.' There is both a sword to kill and a sword to bring to life. Everyone, tell me, what matter is ultimately made clear? 'The turning lion—let everyone observe!'"

Fodeng Xun said, "Shushan emptied his purse to express gratitude, but in the end, a footstick still has inches. This journey was only about building a stupa, but originally the scale had no mark. Daling handled three coins and some copper—no trouble at all. If Huiri were this monk, when Shushan spoke thus, he would reply, 'Today my effort was not wasted. Let me add a word: don't let three coins and some copper disturb you for a lifetime. Don't let Shushan's family shame be exposed outwardly.' As for the 'lotus flower in the twelfth month' and the 'three-foot-long turtle's fur,' how are they to be understood? Do you want to know? When everyone finishes building the stupa, then I will tell you."

Here is the translation of the provided passage, following all the constraints.

Chan Master Foguang Qin said: "He caught a wandering dandy, a powdered scholar fair. In one day, three times he fixed his neat and comely air. But change his face and form, and nobody would know him there—he is the village girl Li Er, from Eastern Hamlet so rare."

Chan Master Foxing Tai said: "When the great stupa was complete, the master builder was paid a treat: a single cent, two, three—just that! Too bad the fellow had no eyes—before his face the coins sat."

Chan Master Gushan Gui said: "Sew the collar near the cuff—no waste at all. Cut the under-arm to fit—it might be long or short. At Dayu Ridge, a single Buddha stands. At Shushan twice the holy glow was shot."

Chan Master Jingshan Gao said: "He dug up the Buddha's common ground, spent three coins and left a corpse unbound. Though Luoshan's ancient Buddha was effective, he still buried the body in one spot."

Chan Master Yunyan Yin said: "One cent, two cents, three cents, let them fall. At Shushan and Dayang, who can count them all? Know that the seamless burial box has no set price: alone it soars through Heaven, blue clouds on ice."

Revered Master Xinghua Jiang. A monk asked: "In front of the Many Children Pagoda, what were they talking about?" The master answered: "One person spreads a lie, ten thousand people spread it as truth."

Touzi said, "Thus, all Buddhas do not appear in the world, nor do they enter nirvana. Since the Buddhas are like this, the teachings are also like this. Therefore, all the sages of the past have secretly realized this ground. Thus, Dipankara did not hand down anything, and perfect enlightenment was attained on its own. Since the Dharma was never transmitted, the flame continues to this day. Since the Dharma can never be attained, what more is there to say? To measure and praise it is but empty talk and mysterious speculation. Yet for one who has reached this ground, why must we meet before a stupa, hold up a flower before the assembly, or cut off an arm and transmit the robe to speak of the Way? Since this is not the case, why couldn't it be lifted on Dayu Ridge?"

He further added a verse: Those who realize nothing in the Way Open the path to all teachings. Whether walking in light or dark, They neither act carelessly nor guard themselves. When the moon comes, the pines appear cold; When clouds depart, the blue hills reveal themselves. The Bridge of Tiantai, from ancient times to now— How many have truly crossed it?
