Forest Spring Elder's Commentary on Chan Master Danxia Chun's Verses on Ancient Cases: Xutang Collection

Case 6: A Novice Monk Stays at a Hermitage(Rain and Snow)

The Master addressed the assembly, saying: "To speak of the past and know the future—this is indeed clever and sharp. When mind is clear and meaning revealed, there is nothing left to ponder. But if you suddenly meet someone of the same spirit, is there anyone here who can bear witness?"

The novice monk Juga was staying in a hermitage. One day he returned in the rain. (He was told to stop but wouldn't stop.) Yaoshan asked, "Where have you come from?" (No need for such a sly question.) The novice replied, "From the valley." (As if I didn't know.) Yaoshan said, "You must be soaking wet." (Just like that, he came.) The novice said, "I'm not playing this drum and flute." (Seems to have some spirit.) Yunyan said, "There isn't even a drum skin—what are you playing?" (Catching echoes from emptiness.) Daowu said, "There isn't even a drum—what skin are you playing?" (Receiving emptiness from echoes.) Yaoshan said, "What a fine melody." (A flute without holes meets a felt clapper. Who would help with the rhythm?)

The master said: The monk Gao of Lizhou once took leave of Yaoshan. Yaoshan asked, "Where are you going?" Gao replied, "My presence among the assembly is an obstruction. I will go to the roadside and set up a thatched hut to offer tea and water to travelers."

Yaoshan said, "The matter of birth and death is great. Why not take the precepts?"

Gao replied, "Knowing this very matter, one rests. What more is there to call 'precepts'?"

Yaoshan said, "Since you are thus, do not leave my side. I will see you from time to time."

Gao dwelt in his hut. One day he returned during the rain. Yaoshan said, "You have come." "Yes," replied Gao. "You must be quite wet," said Yaoshan. "I do not beat this drum and flute," replied Gao.

Yunyan said, "There is not even skin—what drum is there to beat?"

Daowu said, "There is not even a drum—what skin is there to beat?"

Yaoshan said, "Today there is truly a fine melody."

This case is largely the same as recorded in the Ancestral Lamp, with minor differences. Generally, it speaks of the spirited steed, overlooking its color—no need for surprise.

According to how Yaoshan asked and how Gao answered, the Buddha's work and human feeling are fully satisfied. How much more so when Yunyan and Daowu added fire to the heat, seeing righteousness and courageously acting, together extending a hand to offer support. This performance—how many can understand it? If not for the old man Yaoshan, it would nearly fail to harmonize the scattered. Thus it is said, "Today there is truly a fine melody." Now see how Danxia judges the harmony. The verse says:

Occasionally, I drop a word to inquire of him.(Listen carefully, listen well, and contemplate it deeply.) Who among those who understand would be willing to fall into this present time?(In the dust, one can become the master; beyond transformation, guests come of their own accord.) The Hu family does not play the tunes of palace and shang.(Gently pluck them to come.) Together, we blow the jade flute beyond the kalpas.(All sounds have a mind, yet they cannot be heard; the solitary cliff has no ears, yet it knows the tune.)
