> Case 38: Fayan's Sound and Form

> A monk asked Fayan, "How can one penetrate the two words 'sound' and 'form'?" <note>Do not misunderstand.</note> Fayan replied, "If everyone here understood what this monk is asking, penetrating sound and form would not be difficult." <note>In truth, sound and form are genuinely hard to penetrate.</note> Tiantong commented, "From the start, there was no understanding." <note>Eyes full, ears full.</note> "It is only because the thief from within is hard to guard against." <note>If you recognize him, there is no injustice.</note> "When it is seen directly, everything becomes clear." <note>Seeing and hearing are not obscured.</note> "For now, lodge for a while in a thatched hut." <note>This hired hand.</note>

> The teacher said: "The Endless Lamp." A monk asked Fayan, "Among the two words ‘form’ and ‘sound,’ who can penetrate them?" Fayan said to the assembly, "Tell me—has this monk penetrated them or not? If you understand where this monk’s question comes from, penetrating form and sound is not difficult." Tiantong commented: "The monk asked Fayan, ‘How can one penetrate the two words form and sound?’ This is called ‘directly revealing the open ground.’ This monk came here—don’t interpret him as ‘form.’ This monk asked this question—don’t interpret it as ‘sound.’ That’s why Baishui said, ‘I don’t want to impress people with clever talk before or after sound. Why? Because for him, sound is not sound, form is not form.’" A monk asked Master Yuancheng Rock of Zishou Temple in Shouzhou, "Within the entire Buddhist canon, is there anything extraordinary?" Rock said, "I’m afraid you wouldn’t believe it." The monk asked, "What is this extraordinary thing?" Rock said, "The yellow part is paper; the black part is ink." If you understand this, don’t chew on the literal words. Hearing sounds and seeing forms—if you can directly penetrate to the other side, what’s so difficult? But as soon as you fall into conceptual thinking, you’re trapped by illusions and find it hard to grasp. A poor official hires a thief as his servant. A general on the battlefield rides a horse that bites. Who knows that a stubborn, clumsy horse can successfully be used? A capable child does not inherit the family business. The elder recognizes his own child, but the worker considers himself a lowly servant. Even if you can ride form and sound, you’re still stuck before and after the donkey and the horse. Do you want to know the elder in the house? Turn to face the father—there’s no target. Remove the adornments—you’ll lose the name.
