> Case 39: Before Jingshan's Eyes

> Jia Shan said, "Before our eyes, there is no Dharma." <note>What about behind you?</note> The meaning lies right before our eyes. <note>Don't misunderstand.</note> It is not the Dharma of the present moment. <note>It is your own eye.</note> It is beyond what the ears and eyes can reach. <note>Even with forms and sounds, seeing and hearing remain undimmed.</note> Tiantong comments: Old Man Jia Shan untied the sack's opening. <note>Wealth does not cling to the body; pain does not cling to oneself.</note> He scattered rare treasures and jewels, <note>mountain timber and wild things,</note> right in front of everyone. <note>Those who see have a share.</note> At just such a moment, what do you do? <note>Freely take or leave.</note> The path does not pick up what is left behind; the noble person praises this. <note>Unrighteous wealth is to me like floating clouds.</note>

> The master said, "Zen Master Bei Yuan Tong asked Jia Shan, 'Before our eyes there is no dharma; the meaning lies right before our eyes. Yet it is not the dharma before our eyes, nor can it be reached by ears or eyes. Isn't this what you, Venerable, have said?' Jia Shan replied, 'Yes.' Tong then overturned the meditation seat and stood with hands folded. Jia Shan rose and struck him with his staff. Tong then left. Fa Yan commented, 'When he overturned the meditation seat, why didn't he leave right away? Why wait to be struck before leaving? What was his intention?' Wan Song remarked, 'If I had been there when he said, "Isn't this what you, Venerable, have said?" I would have spat in his face and said, "You fool clinging to dung!" Then I would have chased him out with my staff.' Bei Yuan was indeed skillful in his follow-up. Fa Yan brought this up to help later generations see clearly. He truly exhausted himself for the sake of others, yet trouble arose from his own door. Luo Pu once raised this story and asked Senior Monk Yan Cong, 'Which phrase is the guest? Which phrase is the host?' This was also a skillful means to use as a mirror. Now, Tian Tong specifically brings up this story to genuinely guide people. It's like an old woman offering hospitality—within the purple silk curtains, pearls are scattered. If you know how to appreciate them, pearls are everywhere, yet most see them as mud. A monk asked Yuan Tong Xiu Tie Bi, 'I know you have long kept treasures in your bag. Today, before the assembly, may I take a brief look?' Tie Bi replied, 'A noble person loves wealth but acquires it through proper means.' Do you understand Tian Tong's way of not picking up what is lost? A boat full of treasures sinks into the river—who would envy ten strings of straw rope coins?
