> Letter to Layman Qi Yan

> Last month, I received your messenger bearing incense and gifts, along with your instruction. For over ten years, I pondered this matter, and only now have I found the entry point. When your words reached me, they were extraordinary—already, they had moved with swift hands and feet, revealing themselves just so. Now that you have found the entry point, it is like a person drinking raw wine: soon the intoxication fades, and the experience dissipates. Yet, despite this, you have already grasped where to place your hands and feet. Simply hold firm to the place of your discovery and press forward. It is like an iron wall or a silver mountain—if you can hold it steady and master it, you will achieve a great breakthrough from this. Only then will you taste true freedom and joy. There is another point: If you awaken to the immediate present but not to your own nature, it is like having feet without eyes. If you awaken to your own nature but not to the present moment, it is like having eyes without feet. Once you break through both aspects, the countless gates of Dharma and the infinite wonderful meanings all exist within a single hair’s tip. Here, a thousand transformations and myriad changes occur—this is the great illumination of the Dharma, where everything is transparent, including the ancient and modern confusions and koans. But to reach this, you still need to meet a true teacher. Therefore, while the heart of Nirvana is easy to grasp, the wisdom of discernment is difficult to illuminate. To transcend the cycle of birth and death, simply follow the final insight you have attained under this teaching and press forward. When there is no flavor to savor, that is exactly where you must exert your effort. Great doubt inevitably leads to great awakening. Throughout the twelve periods of the day, hold a determined resolve—it will never deceive you. Among the seventy wise teachers the ancients encountered, only one or two possessed true vision; the rest merely had correct understanding. In the tradition of our school, it is rare to find one with great ability to extract the nails and remove the wedges for others. If you are willing to spend an entire lifetime not yet understanding, yet still press on, you may act with intention but achieve without intention. In the end, you will be liberated by this teaching. Across a thousand births and a hundred lifetimes, you will attain great freedom. A thousand beggars—urge yourself onward with diligent effort; that is my hope.

> Once you find an entry point, take joy in it. Your spirit and energy settle into calmness; external temptations find no way in. Whenever you harbor a doubt in your heart, pursue it. At midnight, focus your spirit and deeply investigate. Be open and receptive, quiet and subtle. Rest fully in complete ease. The supreme wonder lies beyond the deepest, And the deep lies beyond the supreme wonder. Commit your entire life with unwavering determination— Master this one true insight. Its reliability will never betray you. I only fear that when you reach a point with no solution, You will hesitate to press forward. That would waste all your previous effort. Never lose your resolve! Exactly when the path feels dull and tasteless, That is when you must double your efforts. Only then can you become a person of great strength. In every phrase, placing things above yourself is supreme; Chasing after things is inferior. Absolutely do not get stuck in literal interpretations of words. This is the greatest illness.

> \[End of Part One\] In the meditation hall, the point is struck home repeatedly. One who has devoted themselves to this matter with such earnestness—in Buddhist circles everywhere, there is no one who does not recognize this. I hope further that when even a single thought does not arise, and the entirety engages in its function, one will scrutinize this subtlety thoroughly. Only then will one realize that essence and function are both complete, and that remaining or departing is entirely free. Do not merely listen to others' glib talk. Only with your own steadfast inner strength can this be attained.

> To practice Chan meditation is to resolve the great matter of life and death. It is not merely to discuss Chan verbally, seeking food and clothing. You must truly let go of body and mind, step back, and examine yourself—this will never fail you. As the saying goes, coarse food is easy to fill the stomach, but fine chewing prevents hunger. Before you attain understanding, it is as if you have lost your parents. After you attain understanding, it is also as if you have lost your parents. If your mind is unclear, do not recklessly act as an elder or claim to be a spiritual teacher. This is like a sacred turtle carrying a diagram—it brings about its own destruction. You must be careful. Once you lose human form, you may not regain it for ten thousand kalpas. Resolve to spend your entire life not understanding, bury yourself among the assembly, and save yourself. This great treasury of radiant light—if you attain it in this life, you will enjoy its benefits for a hundred, a thousand kalpas. The mind is the king; if the master is confused, visitors take advantage. Constantly wield the King of Vajra Sword—whenever thoughts arise of going up or down, immediately cut them into three pieces. This is direct and sharp. If you cannot do this, do not bury the ancestral mind with idle study and intellectual understanding.
