> To the Chan Practitioner Shi Xiang

> A person who has resolved to pursue the path should, throughout the day and night, reflect upon and understand themselves, keeping this intention ever present. They must recognize the great cause and condition that lies right beneath their own feet. Whether in the state of a sage or an ordinary being, it neither increases nor decreases. It stands alone, free from the senses and their objects, transcending all worldly forms. In all actions, it does not establish any fixed location—it is serene, still, and unwavering. Though it manifests in countless ways and transformations, it remains fundamentally unmoved. It reveals itself in response to circumstances and arises when events occur, yet it is always perfectly complete. The essential point is to be empty and tranquil, transcending all things. Once the fundamental source is clear, no darkness remains unilluminated. Ten thousand years are contained in a single thought; a single thought spans ten thousand years. It penetrates from the highest to the deepest, functioning as a complete and great capacity. Like a strong person bending and stretching their arm in an instant, it does not rely on any external force. Thus, the illusory obscurations of birth and death vanish forever, and the indestructible true essence stands alone and revealed. Once attained, it is attained forever, without interruption. All the teachings, dialogues, encounters, and skillful means of the past and present are fully contained within this. Understanding this, if one practices with freedom and ease, deepening over time, they will naturally find harmony everywhere and merge all into one seamless whole. Have you not heard Fadeng say: "Entering a wild field, I do not pick and choose. Reaching out, I pluck a blade of grass. Nothing is ever absent before my eyes. Facing the moment, why not speak? Rootless, yet it lives. Without ground, yet it does not fall. In daily life, you still do not know it—where else will you seek?" Reflect on this carefully.
