> Showing Wisdom to the Chan Practitioner

> Shuǐ Lǎo visited Mǎzǔ and asked about the essential meaning of the Dharma. Mǎzǔ gave him a kick, and Shuǐ Lǎo was greatly awakened. He then said, "All the myriad Dharma gates and immeasurable profound meanings—once you recognize their source in the tip of a single hair, isn't that a joyful thing?" He laughed heartily. From then on, whenever he taught the assembly, he would often say, "Ever since I received that kick from Master Mǎ, I have not stopped laughing." And he would burst into laughter again. This was because he had been earnestly and steadfastly seeking entry, yet had not found it. Suddenly, with that kick, he completely accepted it, shouldered it, and penetrated through without a doubt. Immediately, he expressed the realization within, without needing anything else. Nowadays, if those who study the Dharma are truly sincere and earnest, when a master offers them a single word, a phrase, a turning point, or a situation, they will respond immediately upon contact. How could there be any difficulty? The problem lies in having shallow roots and superficial understanding, fluttering like wind passing over treetops. Even if they are guided a thousand or ten thousand times, they may still fail to grasp it. How much more so when those who cling to intellectual interpretations claim that there is no such thing as awakening? Mǎzǔ and Shuǐ Lǎo simply established this teaching in their time. If one does not understand this, even until the Year of the Donkey, they will not even dream of it. Therefore, in studying the Way, only genuine faith is valued. Chan practitioner Huì is exceptionally dedicated in his practice. I have shared this as a skillful means for his benefit.

> If we speak of this matter, it is like striking flint to spark a fire, like a flash of lightning. Whether one understands or does not understand, one still risks losing one’s life. Now, if one does not understand, losing one’s life is to be expected. But why, even when one understands, does one also risk losing one’s life? Many people become doubtful at this point. They do not realize that only when one has exhausted all understanding does one reach the point where the root of life is severed. Only then are the heart, liver, and five viscera completely transformed, becoming one with the ultimate truth. Therefore, it is said: “Directly, like letting go from the edge of a cliff.” Only then is one forged like cast iron. This is called “breaking through the thorny forest.” Then one no longer doubts the words of the old masters. Only then does one truly possess the mark of genuine study and practice.
