The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Wuan Puning was compiled by his attendants Jingyun, Qingze, Daozhao, Jingyong, and Chanliao. It is a collection of teachings passed down from the Southern Song Dynasty Linji school master Wuan Puning. This work includes his discourses, Dharma talks, verses, and letters, embodying the Linji school's approach of directly pointing to the mind, seeing one's true nature, and attaining Buddhahood. It also integrates the intellectual characteristics of Song Dynasty Neo-Confucianism and Zen thought. As an important document for studying Southern Song Zen Buddhism, particularly the exchanges between Chinese and Japanese Zen, this recorded sayings not only holds a lofty position in the history of Chinese Zen but also exerted a profound influence on the development of Japanese Zen. It is one of the key texts of the Yangqi branch of the Linji school.
