> Jingming Temple was established by Emperor Xuanwu. It was constructed during the Jingming era and named after that period. Located one li outside the Xuanyang Gate, on the eastern side of the Imperial Avenue, the temple grounds spanned five hundred bu in each direction. From the front, one could see Mount Song and Shaoshi Peak, while the back faced the Imperial City. Green woods cast their shadows, and clear waters formed gentle ripples. This was a place of remarkable natural beauty, with fresh air and unmatched scenic charm. The hall, built into the mountain with suspended heights, housed over a thousand rooms. With multiple halls and layered chambers, crossbeams faced each other. Blue towers and purple pavilions were connected by elevated walkways. Although outside, the four seasons changed, inside there was neither cold nor heat. Beyond the eaves lay hills and ponds, with bamboo, pine, orchids, and angelica lining the stairs and paths. They caught the breeze, collected the dew, and spread fragrance far and wide. In the Zhengguang era, the Empress Dowager built a seven-story pagoda, rising a hundred ren from the ground. As the stele inscription by Xing Zicai says, "It seems to hear the thunder below and brushes against the shooting stars above." Indeed, that was true. Its decorations were resplendent, rivaling those of Yongning Temple. The golden canopy and precious bells shone brightly above the clouds.

Sometimes, yellow-shelled turtles and purple-scaled fish would appear and disappear among the lush waterweeds, while blue ducks and white geese floated and dove in the green water. > Zicai was a man from the Hejian region. He was naturally sharp and perceptive, refined in temperament and elegant in character. He devoted himself deeply to study, reviewing the old to understand the new. As a literary master and an authority on learning, he surpassed scholars like Ban Gu and Sima Qian in their respective fields. His exemplary conduct and noble principles stood even higher than those of Xu Shao and Guo Tai. Consequently, people of high social standing gathered at his door, and those who cherished wisdom filled his rooms in a constant flux of visitors. To enter his hall was like stepping into the school of Confucius himself, and to receive his praise was like hearing the eloquent words of the eastern Wu masters. He was highly renowned in his time, and his reputation spread far and wide. During the Zheng’guang era, he began his official career as a funeral attendant for the late emperor and a court attendant. Soon, he was promoted to Vice Director of the Imperial Secretariat. Zicai was widely learned and broadly knowledgeable. There was nothing he didn't understand, and the court often consulted him on military and state affairs. When the royal court fell into turmoil and the Imperial Academy ceased its activities, he was later appointed as the Sacrificial Wine of the Imperial Academy to instruct in the highest schools. Zicai penalized the lazy and rewarded the diligent, dedicating himself to inspiring students. Consequently, many of the young scholars came to master profound teachings. The culture of the Zhu and Si Rivers (Confucian tradition) was once again revived. Towards the end of the Yongxi era, he requested to resign due to his mother's advanced age. The emperor did not consent. Zicai implored earnestly, breaking down in tears. Moved by his plea, the emperor finally agreed. He was commanded to return home to care for his mother, retaining the title of Grand Master of Splendid Happiness. At his place of residence, he was given five attendants. Once a year, he was allowed to visit the court to offer counsel. Dukes and princes saw him off with a ceremony as grand as that of the Han dynasty bidding farewell to two retired scholars. After the capital was moved to Ye, litigation became heavy and disputes among laws and decrees led to contradictions. Legal cases piled up like mountains. The emperor then ordered Zicai, together with the Attendant Officer Wen Zisheng, to compile the \*New Codes of the Qilin Hall\* in fifteen sections. These codes were used by the central government to resolve doubts and served as the foundation for governance by the local prefectures. During the Wuding era, he was appointed Commander of the Brave Cavalry and Governor of Yanzhou. His governance was pure and peaceful, so officials and the people alike felt reassured. Later, he was summoned to become the Director of the Imperial Secretariat. At that time, warfare was raging outside the capital, and court affairs were many. Both national rituals and court ceremonies were established by Zicai. His works—poems, essays, imperial decrees, memorials, inscriptions, eulogies, and records—five hundred pieces total, have all been passed down through the ages. Neighboring kingdoms admired him as a model, and his excellence became a source of praise both at court and among the people.
