Mahāyāna Madhyamaka Commentary (大乘中觀釋論)

Chapter 14: Observing Harmony

Furthermore, some outsiders claim that within the ultimate truth there exist eyes and other sense faculties, as well as all conditioned phenomena. They argue that these come together in combination, as the Buddha taught, saying there are three things: the eye faculty, the visual object, and eye-consciousness. When these three come together, contact arises. From this contact, the various defilements then emerge. This is called "combination"—it is not that these things do not exist at all, like the hair of a turtle. Therefore, the World-Honored One sometimes speaks of phenomena as having combination.
