Preface to the Essential Collection of the Mysterious Pivot
Huaitang, a man of profound wisdom, guided living beings with skillful means and benefitted them through compassionate teachings. Adapting to the depth or shallowness of each student's capacity, he prescribed the appropriate medicine for their afflictions. Even when faced with scholars of the nine diverse schools who debated with intricate arguments, he humbled their arrogant resolve and melted away their doubts like ice dissolving. Because of this, renowned ministers, eminent figures, officials, and laypeople all regretted not having met him sooner.
In his spare time from teaching, he distilled the essence of the *Record of the Mirror of the Source* and compiled it into a collection, naming it *The Essential Compilation of the Mysterious Pivot*. This makes it easy for students to grasp and inspires those of superior potential to silently align with the true tradition, without falling into erroneous views. It is like using the wind to fan a fire, yet merging into the realm of radiant light. Here, mind and reality are both forgotten, and the ordinary and the sacred are equal—a single Bhagavan.
His disciple, Pulang, had this text carved onto woodblocks for printing and asked me to write a preface. Thus, I have written this account of meditative absorption to offer a modest praise.
