> Blood-Inscribed Flower Ornament Sutra

> The high monk Gan, head of the Buddha Peak, was about to return to Donglin Monastery, following in the footsteps of the ancient Master Yuan, emulating the pure cultivation of the Lotus Society. He wished to pierce his skin and use his blood to hand-copy the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* as a pure practice to adorn the Buddha-land, and he asked for a few words of guidance. I said: "Disciple of the Buddha, listen carefully! What do you take to be the great sutra? What do you take to be the pure practice? Do you consider the writing, the paper, and the ink to be the sutra? Or the words and language? Do you consider the physical movements and prostrations to be the pure practice? Or the arrangement of brushstrokes and script? If the writing, paper, and ink are the sutra, then the market stalls and official documents are all the great sutra. If words and language are the sutra, then casual chatter and worldly writing are all subtle truths. If so, nothing is lacking at all—why bother to copy it? If prostrations and bodily movements are the pure practice, then everyday activities—coughing, spitting, waving an arm—are all Guanyin's perfect penetration into truth. If the arrangement of brushstrokes is the pure practice, then receiving guests, lifting chopsticks, picking up a spoon—all are Samantabhadra's wondrous deeds. If so, everything is inherently complete—why seek anything else? To abandon this and speak of Dharma practice is like knowing that two times five is ten but not knowing what ten is. Nevertheless, the ten directions are all the Eternal Still Light, originally without brightness or darkness. The entire realm of reality is the Pure Land, fundamentally without coarse or fine. The myriad phenomena are all the spiritual writings of the Ocean-Seal Samadhi. Scales, shells, feathers, and fur are all the true body of the Dharma-realm. The cries of apes and the songs of birds all expound the perfect sound of non-duality. The falling rain and drifting clouds all reveal the wondrous function of spiritual powers. Thus, there is no facing or turning away, no coming or going, no grasping or rejecting, no beginning or end. The three times do not shift it. Ten ages are gathered into a single thought. This is the inexhaustible treasury of the Dharma-realm. You wish, within this inexhaustible treasury, to rely on petty thoughts of birth and death, pointing to physical forms and adornments as Dharma practice, seeking the true cause of the Pure Land—this is mistaking cow dung for sandalwood, fish eyes for wish-fulfilling pearls. Moreover, the Dharma-gate of a single word cannot be fully written even with all the ink in the ocean. You wish to use your limited four elements, a drop of your body's blood, a moment of your fleeting time, to write the inexhaustible true sutra and perform inconceivable Buddha-work. This is like trying to paint the sky or grasp a reflection in a mirror. Contemplate this! If you do not yet understand, try going to the peak of Five Elders Mountain and truly observe the mountain forms and lake light, listen to the birdsong and the stream sounds. Ask yourself: how is this different from Vairocana sitting in the Palace of Universal Light, with the countless bodies throughout the ten directions and assemblies countless as particles of dust, expounding the Sutra of Universal Illumination of the Dharma-realm? Contemplate! Contemplate!"
