### 示懷愚修禪人

> A Warning to the Foolish Cultivator of Chan

學人圓修自吳中一缽走瘴鄉，侍余二載餘，適余於戈戟場中而作佛事，修精持一念，作務為眾先，晝夜無倦，始終如一日。余時時泠眼覷之，頗有衲子氣息，念末法向袈裟下提持此事者難得其人，心甚愛之。頃，辭余欲參諸方知識，臨行乃問：「四大本空，五蘊非有，病在甚麼處？」老人曰：「病在沒有處。」因說此〈偈〉以助行腳：「四大本空空是病，五蘊非有有成非，兩頭坐斷無消息，始信家山到處歸。」

> The student Yuanxiu, carrying a single traveling bowl, came from Wuzhong to the malaria-ridden south, accompanying me for over two years. I was conducting Buddhist work amidst the chaos of warfare, and Yuanxiu upheld his single-minded devotion, putting others first in all his labors, tireless day and night, consistent from start to finish. I often observed him with a discerning eye and found him to bear the true mark of a monk. Considering how rare it is in these latter days of the Dharma to find someone who upholds this practice beneath the monk's robe, I held him in deep regard. Recently, he took leave of me to seek the wisdom of various teachers. Before departing, he asked: "The four elements are fundamentally empty, the five aggregates do not truly exist—then where exactly lies the affliction?" The elder replied: "The affliction lies in your 'not existing.'" I then offered this verse to aid his journey: \*The four elements are empty—yet this very emptiness itself is the affliction.\* \*The five aggregates are not—but this 'not-being' becomes a clinging to existence.\* \*When both extremes are severed, and not a trace remains,\* \*Only then will you believe that the homeland is found wherever you arrive.\*
