> Guidance for Li Zirong

> An ancient saying goes: "When shaving hair, one should cut to the skin; when trimming nails, one should cut to the flesh." This speaks of being thorough and resolute. Therefore, those who study the Way must first foster a long-lasting, unwavering resolve and put forth earnest, diligent effort—like climbing a ten-thousand-zhang mountain, not stopping until reaching the very summit. Step by step, they strive; thought by thought, they do not retreat. They are neither swayed by praise nor blame, nor shaken by disputes, nor crushed by hardship. It is like one person facing ten thousand in battle: the slightest hesitation or retreat undoes all prior efforts. How, then, can one reach the realm of unwavering peace and ease without a steadfast mind?
