### 示非石玉禪人

末法學人多尚浮習不詣真實，故於佛法教道但執名言不達究竟之旨，故增益知見生大我慢。是又以佛法結生死根，良由最初發心不從生死上著腳，亦不知生死為何物？將謂與己無干，然夜行，故不得正修行路。且佛教人言言句句乃出生死法，豈意今人反墮耶？此非佛咎，咎在學人無正信正見，向未親近真善知識指點說破耳！學人方玉昔參老人於嶺外，真實樸素，既老人東遊吳越，因刻《楞嚴》、《法華新疏》，命玉校讎，至於參詳斟酌得老人言外之旨，是知其所向往者。老人今居匡廬休老，異日玉能相伴於空閒寂寞之中，參究向上事，當不被宿習文字作所知障也。老人行矣！七賢峰頭有牛糞火煨芋以待，子其念之。

> In this final age of the Dharma, most practitioners merely skim the surface of learning and never touch the true substance. Thus, in their study of the Buddha's teachings, they cling only to words and concepts without reaching the underlying purpose. This only multiplies their opinions and feeds a profound arrogance. In this way, they use the very Dharma to forge the root of birth and death. The root cause is that, from the very start, they never set their minds on the matter of birth and death, nor do they even understand what birth and death truly is. They assume it has nothing to do with them, and walking in the dark, they never find the true path of practice. Yet every word and phrase the Buddha taught is a method for escaping birth and death. How is it that people today have fallen into the opposite? This is not the Buddha's fault; the fault lies with practitioners who lack true faith and right view, and who have never drawn near a genuine teacher to have this pointed out and explained. The practitioner Fang Yu once attended on this old layman beyond the mountains. He was truly honest and unadorned. When I traveled east to Wu and Yue, I had the New Commentaries on the \*Śūraṅgama Sūtra\* and the \*Lotus Sūtra\* carved in woodblocks, and I asked Yu to proofread them. In the course of comparing and deliberating, he grasped the meaning beyond my words, and so I know where his aspirations truly lie. Now I have retired here at Mount Kuanglu to rest my old age. If, one day, Yu can bear me company in these empty, quiet places, investigating the matter of the supreme, then he will no longer be hindered by old habitual patterns and scholarly knowledge serving as an obstruction to awakening. This old man is on his way now. At the peak of Qixian Peak, there are roasted yams warming in a fire of dried cow dung, waiting for him. Keep that in mind.
