### 示王聖沖、元深二生

> For Wang Shengchong and Yuan Shen

佛性之在人，如水在高原，有穿鑿者無不得之。良以吾人煩惱根深、愛憎情固，不啻高原之土也，苟能力鑿深求施工不已，務在拔煩惱之根、裂愛憎之網，則法性淵泉源源不竭，溉靈根而沃智慧之芽，不唯道果可期，且將濬潛流而潤焦枯，普益人天而歸法海。涓滴而與渤澥同波者，此豈向外求之耶？特吾性分之固有耳！聖沖、元深昆季，久入紫柏之室。哲人往矣！恐性水清流不無雍閼，老人適來而為疏之，今則開發源頭，從此永無枯竭矣！其無以煩惱乾土投而濁之也。

> The Buddha-nature within people is like water in high plateaus—wherever one digs, one finds it. This is because our afflictions run deep and our attachments to love and hate are firmly rooted, no different from the soil of high plateaus. If we can dig with effort and persist without cease, striving to uproot the roots of affliction and tear apart the web of love and hate, then the profound spring of Dharma-nature will flow endlessly, nourishing the spiritual root and watering the sprout of wisdom. Not only can we anticipate the fruit of the path, but we will also dredge the hidden stream to moisten the withered and parched, benefiting both gods and humans and returning all to the ocean of Dharma. A single drop sharing the same waves as the vast sea—how could this be sought externally? It is simply what is inherent in our own nature! Sheng Chong and Yuan Shen, brothers, long studied under Zibai. The sage has departed! Fearing that the clear stream of nature-water might be blocked, the elder has come to clear it. Now, with the source opened, there will never be drought again. Do not cast the dry soil of affliction into it and muddy its waters.
