### 示孫詵白

> Sun Qian's Admonition

無明生死根株，只在現前一念，如人周行十方，盡生盡力而不已者，將謂已涉千萬途程，殊不知未離腳跟一步也，是知歷劫妄想遷流生死輪轉，實未離當人一念耳！若能日用現前見聞覺知，念念生處著力覷破，生處不生，則歷劫生死情根當下頓斷，其實不假他力也。佛說：「狂心不歇，歇即菩提。」豈虛語哉？今老人指示「父母未生前」一句著力參看，他日當有自信之時也。

> Ignorance is the root of birth and death, and it lies only in the present thought. It is like a person traveling the ten directions, exhausting all their strength without stopping—they might think they have covered countless miles, but little do they know they have not moved a single step from where they stand. Thus, we understand that the wandering thoughts of countless eons, the cycles of birth and death, have in truth never left the present moment of awareness! If you can, in your daily life, in what you see, hear, feel, and know, strive to see through each thought at its very arising—and that arising itself becomes non-arising—then the root of birth and death across endless eons is cut off in that instant. This truly does not depend on any external power. The Buddha said, "The deluded mind, when it ceases, is itself Bodhi." Were these empty words? Now, I, this old man, point you to the phrase "Before your parents gave birth to you" as a focus for sustained inquiry. The day will come when you have confidence in it yourself.
