### 示姜養晦

姜生少年英發，骨氣不凡，非靈根夙植般若種子深厚者，未易得此美質也。幼稚會見紫柏大師，即命之曰「信光」，意謂性具般若之光也。適參老人，請益殷勤，因字之曰「養晦」，蓋吾人日用見聞知覺皆智光煥發，第被無明蒙蔽變為情識故暗而不彰，苟能自信本有真光，不昧於現前境界，愛惡關頭昏闇之中而靈光獨耀，不被情根之所蒙蔽，是於晦而能養，則光體愈明而真元可復矣！用其光無遺身殃，姜生體此則廣大光明當發現於動作云為之間，至其功名建立皆不朽之盛業矣！豈可自昧而不信耶？但在我慢幢摧，則光明自露耳！

> Jiang Sheng showed extraordinary promise in his youth, with an uncommon spirit and bearing. Only one whose spiritual roots were deeply planted with the seeds of prajna wisdom from past lives could possess such fine qualities. When he was young, he met the great master Zibai, who named him "Xinguang" (Faith-Light), meaning that the light of prajna is inherent in his nature. Later, when he came to consult with me earnestly and respectfully, I gave him the courtesy name "Yanghui" (Nurturing Stillness). This is because in our daily lives—seeing, hearing, knowing, and perceiving—all radiate the light of wisdom. Yet, obscured by ignorance, this light transforms into emotional consciousness and becomes darkened, unable to shine forth. If one can trust in the true light that is inherently present, not be deluded by present circumstances, and let the spirit's radiance shine alone even in the darkness of love and hatred—unclouded by emotional roots—then one can nurture this light within stillness. As the light body becomes clearer, the true origin can be restored. By using this light without harm to oneself, Jiang Sheng—if he embodies this—will discover vast brightness manifesting itself in all his actions and deeds. His achievements and reputation will become immortal works of excellence. How could he be deluded and fail to trust this? Once the towering pillar of arrogance is destroyed, the light will naturally reveal itself.
