The Recorded Sayings of Monk Nan Yue Ji Qi, spoken by the eminent monk Hong Chu (styled Ji Qi) of the Qing dynasty, was compiled by his disciples such as Ji Ji. Completed during the turbulent transition from the Ming to the Qing dynasty, this work records the sayings, teachings, dialogues of Zen encounter, and letters of Chan Master Hong Chu as he propagated the Linji school in the Jiangnan region. It embodies the core of his Chan teaching, emphasizing the direct pointing to the human mind and realizing one’s inherent Buddha-nature. As an important text of the Linji school during the Ming-Qing transition, this recorded sayings not only reflects the practical style of Chan practice at that time but also exerted a profound influence on the later development of Chan studies. It remains a key text for researching modern Chinese Buddhist history and the evolution of Chan thought.
