> Generations of Compassion

> The master asked Shangzhi: "To not serve kings or lords, but to hold one's aspirations high—what are your aspirations?" Shangzhi was silent. The master answered on his behalf: "Transcending the Buddhas, surpassing the patriarchs."

> The sage was asked: "I cannot claim to be a sage—why do you so arrogantly exalt yourself?" The sage remained silent. A response was offered on his behalf: "Yet you cannot blame me for it."

> The master asked a monk, "Why have you lost half of your nostrils?" The monk replied, "They penetrate heaven and earth." The master said, "Setting aside the matter of penetrating heaven and earth, give me back the nostrils you lost." The monk responded, "Even this half is already too much." The master said, "Why speak nonsense? Why not say, 'Even now, nothing is lost'?"

> The master asked the assembly, "This nature of transgression is not within, not without, not in between—where does it reside?" The assembly offered answers, but none were fitting. He spoke on their behalf: "It fills the empty space completely."

> The master asked the assembly, "Discussing things in the ghost cave is not worth talking about. Step out of the ghost cave and speak a phrase for me to see." One monk said, "A sweet melon is sweet to the very tip." The master did not approve. He spoke on behalf of the monk, saying, "A bright sky in broad daylight."

> Sometimes it is said: "Printed from a block, molded from a form—here, I have no use for any of that. Speak a word where life stirs—let’s hear it." The assembly remained silent. The master offered a substitute: "If the venerable teacher permits, this student will speak."

> A notice was posted, and the master asked the assembly: "Everyone inherently possesses it; each and every one is not without it. Why then is there this special occasion for its use?" One monk said: "When the dragon roars, the mist rises; when the tiger roars, the wind stirs." Another monk said: "Adding another layer of splendor to brocade." The master said: "This mountain monk, however, thinks differently. Without enduring the bone-chilling cold, how could one witness the plum blossoms bursting forth with their fragrant scent?"

> The master asked the assembly, "How do you strike someone during the seven sevens?" The assembly was silent. He answered on their behalf, "I have been thoroughly confounded by the master." And he added, "Today, this learner has missed the mark."

> The master asked the assembly, "What is the Immovable One?" None of the answers given by the assembly matched the meaning. So he answered on their behalf, saying, "At dawn, he journeys to the Western Heavens; by dusk, he returns to the Eastern Land."

> The master asked the assembly, "A patch-robed monk will not stay in a cage, nor turn his head when called. Why then do all the ancient buddhas in this hall obey this mountain monk's commands?" One monk said, "However great the task, it must begin from the ground; however high one climbs, what can be done about the sky?" The master said, "The thirty staff blows you left here the other day have yet to be delivered." The monk said, "Where is the fault?" The master said, "Adding another thirty would not be too many." Then he answered on his behalf, "Offering this body and mind to the dust-motes of the universe."
