Collected Essentials from the Recorded Sayings of Master Wuyi of Boshan is a compilation of the recorded teachings of the late Ming Dynasty Chan master Yuanlai, edited by his disciple Zhengcheng and compiled by Yuanxian. Master Yuanlai belonged to the Boshan lineage of the Caodong school and was active during the Buddhist revival of the late Ming period. The work encompasses methods of Chan investigation, teachings on mind-nature, essential instructions for practice, and daily dialogues, offering profound elucidation on the principle of integrating insight and practical cultivation in Chan. This text systematically reflects Yuanlai’s Chan thought, blending the practices of kanhua Chan and silent illumination Chan. It exerted a deep influence on Chan styles during the late Ming and early Qing periods and stands as an important document for the study of Caodong school thought and the history of Chan Buddhism in the Ming and Qing dynasties, holding a significant place within Buddhist canonical literature.
