The guide then leads the practitioner before the acharya. The practitioner kneels, palms together, and the acharya declares:
According to the *Vinaya-mātṛkā Śāstra*, after shaving one's head and donning the monastic robe, one receives the Three Refuges, the Five Precepts, and the Ten Precepts. When each precept platform is approached, the precepts are to be taken personally. Now, for this occasion, you will receive the Three Refuges that transform wrong views, turning away from beginningless wrong-mindedness and taking refuge in the correct awakening of the Three Jewels. I should reveal to you the realm of the Three Jewels. However, since you have just entered the path and are not yet familiar with the meaning of the teachings, I will present the Phenomenal Three Jewels, so that you can focus your mind on something tangible. Know this: "A sculpted holy image is the Buddha Jewel; bound scriptures in precious cases are the Dharma Jewel; shaving the head and receiving precepts makes one a member of the Sangha Jewel." You should sincerely take refuge from now on, and for the rest of your life, vow to rely on the Buddha as your teacher, vow to study the treasury of Dharma, and vow to unite with the ocean of the Sangha.
Having thus guided them according to their individual capacities, the Acharya now instructs the practitioner:
"I, [Name], for the rest of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, take refuge in the Sangha." ((Recite three times))
"I, [your name], for the rest of my life, take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha." (Recite three times)
"Since you have left home to become a monastic, you should follow the teachings and practice the conduct of a monastic. Do not be lazy or negligent, idling away your days. From now on, you must first distance yourself from all evils. Let me list six of them: first, sexual misconduct; second, stealing; third, killing; fourth, lying; fifth, drinking alcohol; and sixth, eating meat. These six evils are the root of obstacles to the path, the source of the cycle of rebirth. You must deeply distance yourself from them and be cautious not to commit them.
You should seek out a wise teacher in advance, asking about the procedures and rituals for receiving precepts. He will guide and inspire you, allowing your mind to become clear and awakened. If you remain completely ignorant, claiming to receive the precepts in name, you will not truly receive them. Without true precepts, you will uselessly accept offerings of faith throughout your life. In the future, you will fall into the lower realms, being trapped in the cycle of rebirth for countless ages, with no way to liberation. This is no small matter—you must take it seriously.
Furthermore, from now on, you must set aside all distracting affairs. Practice recitation day and night, earnestly pray, and beseech the holy ones for their blessings.
After receiving the precepts, you may study the precepts with your teacher, listen to sutras, seek out wise spiritual friends (kalyāṇa-mitra), recite sutras and cultivate Buddha-recitation, or take part in meritorious activities and protect the Dharma, benefiting sentient beings. You should not seek fame or profit, commit evil deeds that break the precepts, discredit the monastic community, hinder the true Dharma, and create bitter karma that only increases the cycle of birth and death. This would make your renunciation meaningless.
Always remember these words to encourage yourself. Do not die in vain, only to regret it later."
