Tonsure Ceremony (剃髮儀式)

Chapter 7: Cutting Off Hair and Putting On the Robes

The guiding teacher then leads the practitioner before the master. The practitioner kneels upright with palms together, and a clean cloth is draped around their shoulders and neck. The master says:

"Shaving off hair and beard is to let go of arrogance. Wearing dyed robes is to remove greed and craving. In but a moment, you become no different in outward bearing from the noble ones of the Three Vehicles—so you should rejoice in yourself."

After saying this, he shaved the hair on all four sides, leaving only a small tuft on the crown. As the hair was being shaved, the whole assembly chanted the verse for leaving home:

"They shave their heads and hold fast to their vows, cutting off attachment and clinging to no one. They leave home to spread the sacred path, vowing to save all beings."
