The Recorded Sayings of Zen Master Xueguan is a compilation of the teachings of the Ming Dynasty Zen monk Xueguan Zhiyin, recorded by his disciples such as Chengluan and edited by Kaishang. This work was completed during the transmission of the Zen lineage in the late Ming period, reflecting the developmental state of the Caodong school at that time. Its contents include Master Xueguan's formal Dharma discourses, sharp exchanges of dialogue, letters, and gāthās, elucidating the Zen school's teachings on mind-nature and emphasizing the path of practice centered on sudden awakening to one's true nature and directly pointing to the human mind. As an important document of the Ming Dynasty Caodong school, these recorded sayings not only embody the distinctive Zen characteristics of Master Xueguan but also provide valuable historical material for the study of late Ming Zen thought, holding significant academic value in Buddhist literature as a link between past and future.
