> Now, in this teaching, what does "sitting in meditation" mean? In this teaching, nothing is hindered. Not giving rise to thoughts while facing all external conditions is called "sitting"; seeing your own nature without confusion is called "meditation." What is "meditation concentration" (Chan Ding)? Detaching from external appearances is called Chan (meditation), and inner calmness without confusion is called Ding (concentration). If you can detach from appearances externally, your inner nature will remain calm. Your fundamental nature is originally pure, and that purity is concentration—but if you encounter conditions and become disturbed, you lose it. When you detach from appearances and stay undisturbed, that is concentration. Detaching from outer appearances is Chan, and inner calmness is Ding. When outer Chan and inner Ding are united, it is called "Chan Ding." The Vimalakirti Sutra says: "In an instant, there is a clear awakening, and you regain your original mind." The Brahma Net Sutra says: "The original source is naturally pure." Good friends! See your true nature's inherent purity; cultivate and act on your own, realizing your nature's Dharma body, practicing the Buddha's way yourself, and accomplishing the Buddha path on your own.
