> Chapter 20

善知識！總須自體與受無相戒。一時，逐惠能口道，令善知識見自三身佛：

> Good advisors, each of you should accept the Formless Precepts within your own being. Now, repeat after me as I speak, so that you may see your own Three Bodies of Buddha within yourselves:

於自色身，歸依清淨法身佛；於自色身，歸依千百億化身佛；以上三唱於自色身，歸依當身圓滿報身佛。

> To my own physical body, I take refuge in the pure Dharmakaya Buddha. To my own physical body, I take refuge in the countless transformation bodies of the Buddha. <note>Repeat the above three times.</note> To my own physical body, I take refuge in the perfect reward body of the Buddha here and now.

色身是舍宅，不可言歸，向者三身佛在自法性，世人盡有，為迷不見，外覓三身如來，不見自色身中三身佛。善知識！聽與善知識說，令善知識於自色身見自法性有三身佛，此三身佛從自性上生。

> Your physical body is like a house—it is not something to take ultimate refuge in. The true Three-Body Buddha exists within your own essential nature. Every person has it, but because of delusion, they do not see it. They seek the Three-Body Tathagata outside, without recognizing the Three-Body Buddha within their own physical body. Good and wise friends, listen as I explain this to you, so that you may see the Three-Body Buddha within your own physical body and realize that these three bodies arise directly from your own essential nature.

何名清淨法身佛？善知識！世人性本自淨，萬法在自性。思量一切惡事，即行於惡行；思量一切善事，便修於善行。知如是一切法盡在自性，自性常清淨，日月常明。只為雲覆蓋，上明下暗，不能了見日月星辰，忽遇慧風吹散捲盡雲霧，萬象森羅，一時皆現。世人性淨，猶如清天。慧如日，智如月，智慧常明。於外著境，妄念浮雲蓋覆，自性不能明故。遇善知識，開真正法，吹卻迷妄，內外明澈，於自性中，萬法皆現。一切法在自性，名為清淨法身。自歸依者，除不善心與不善行，是名歸依。

> What is meant by the Pure Dharma Body of a Buddha? Good friends, the intrinsic nature of people is originally pure. All phenomena exist within this intrinsic nature. If you dwell on evil thoughts, you perform evil deeds; if you contemplate good thoughts, you practice good deeds. Know that all phenomena are found within your intrinsic nature. This nature is always pure, like the sun and moon that constantly shine. They are only obscured by clouds, causing the upper part to be bright while the lower part is dark, so you cannot clearly see the sun, moon, or stars. But if a wise wind suddenly blows away and scatters all the clouds and mist, then the myriad forms and appearances are all revealed at once. People's intrinsic nature is pure, like a clear sky. Wisdom is like the sun, and understanding is like the moon; wisdom and understanding always shine. However, if you cling to external objects, delusive thoughts rise like floating clouds covering and blocking your intrinsic nature, so it cannot be clear. By encountering a wise teacher who opens up the true Dharma, the clouds of delusion and confusion are blown away. Then, both inside and outside become perfectly clear, and within the intrinsic nature, all phenomena are revealed. Because all phenomena reside in the intrinsic nature, it is called the Pure Dharma Body. Taking refuge in oneself means abandoning an unwholesome mind and unwholesome actions. This is what is called taking refuge.

何名為千百億化身佛？不思量，性即空寂；思量，即是自化。思量惡法，化為地獄；思量善法，化為天堂。思量毒害，化為畜生；思量慈悲，化為菩薩。思量智慧，化為上界；思量愚癡，化為下方。自性變化甚多，迷人自不知見。一念善，智慧即生，此名自性化身佛。

何名為圓滿報身佛？一燈能除千年闇，一智能滅萬年愚。莫思向前，常思於後，常後念善，名為報身。一念惡，報卻千年善心；一念善，報卻千年惡滅。無常以來，後念善，名為報身。

從法身思量，即是化身；念念善，即是報身。自悟自修，即名歸依也。皮肉是色身，色身是舍宅，不在歸依也。但悟三身，即識大意。
