### 住毘盧菴

> Dwelling in the Vairochana Hermitage

結冬，小參。舉：「黃山谷請益於晦堂云：『佛法徑捷處，乞師方便。』堂曰：『秪如仲尼道：「二三子以我為隱乎？吾無隱乎爾。」太史居常如何理論？』谷擬對，堂曰：『不是，不是。』一日，侍堂山行，睹巖桂盛放，堂曰：『此是甚麼香？』谷曰：『木樨花香。』堂曰：『吾無隱乎爾。』谷即豁然作禮，曰：『和尚恁麼老婆心切。』堂曰：『只要公到家耳。』晦堂曲垂方便，善用機籌，令山谷久疑頓息，暢快平生。揀點將來，秪解順水推舟，不能逆風把舵。今日若有人乞指徑捷，待聲未絕，但云：『已是迂曲了也。』不惟使他直下知歸，抑免墮於知見。還會麼？鯨吞海水盡，露出珊瑚枝。」

> Winter retreat, informal Dharma talk. Here's a case: "When Huang Shangu asked Huatang for guidance, saying, 'Please, Master, show me the direct and swift path to the Buddha Dharma,' Huatang replied, 'Just as Confucius said, "My disciples, do you think I am hiding something from you? I hide nothing from you." How do you, Historian, usually interpret this?' Shangu was about to answer when Huatang said, 'No, no.' One day, while accompanying Huatang on a mountain walk, Shangu noticed the osmanthus in full bloom. Huatang asked, 'What fragrance is this?' Shangu said, 'It's the osmanthus blossoms.' Huatang said, 'I hide nothing from you.' At that, Shangu was suddenly enlightened and bowed, saying, 'Master, your compassionate concern is truly profound.' Huatang said, 'I just wanted you to arrive home.'" Huatang skillfully extended his compassionate guidance, adroitly using his methods, allowing Shangu's long-held doubts to dissolve completely, leaving him at ease for the rest of his life. Examining this closely: Huatang merely knew how to push the boat with the current, not how to steer against the wind. If someone today were to ask for a direct and swift path, before the sound of their voice even faded, I would simply say, "You've already taken a detour." This not only enables them to immediately know where to return, but also prevents them from falling into intellectual views. Do you understand? The whale swallows all the sea's water, and the coral branches emerge.

小參。「至道無難，惟嫌撿擇。但莫憎愛，洞然明白。熱不向火，冷不當風。愛旃檀之香，惡伊蘭之臭。且道撿擇不撿擇，憎愛不憎愛。若撿點得出，嫩柳過墻連草緣。撿點不出，榴花逐水映山紅。」

> A Small Discourse. The supreme path is not difficult; it only rejects picking and choosing. Just do not cling to likes and dislikes, and everything becomes clear and bright. If it is hot, do not rush toward the fire; if it is cold, do not block the wind. We love the fragrance of sandalwood and detest the stench of castor oil. Now tell me: is this picking and choosing, or not? Is this liking and disliking, or not? If you can discern this, you will see how the tender willow leans over the wall to touch the grass, and the green vines follow along. If you cannot discern it, then look at the pomegranate blossoms drifting with the water, brightening the mountain with their red.

元旦，小參。「陽象初回，乾元新肇。翡翠簾前，子轉身而就父；黃金殿上，臣退位以朝君。太平元有象，何妨鳳舞鸞翔？造化本無私，一任龍吟虎嘯。正恁麼時，如何是祝讚一句？宸庭有道三邊靜，萬姓歡呼樂太平。」

小參。豎拂子，曰：「上大人，丘乙己。」拂一拂，曰：「化三千，七十士。」左右顧視，曰：「爾小生，八九子。會麼？」眾默然。師曰：「佳作仁，可知禮也。」良久，曰：「汝等秪知上大上，千字文未夢見在。」復呵呵大笑，下座。

> Small instruction. Raising the whisk, he said: "The great sage above, Confucius." He flicked the whisk once and said: "Transforming three thousand, seventy scholars." Looking left and right, he said: "You young students, eight or nine of you. Do you understand?" The assembly remained silent. The master said: "Excellent work in virtue, and known for propriety." After a long pause, he said: "You only know the great sage above; you haven't even dreamed of the Thousand Character Classic." Then he laughed heartily and stepped down from the seat.
