The Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Juelang Sheng of the Tianjie Monastery is a compilation of the discourses of the eminent Ming dynasty monk Juelang Daosheng, edited by his disciples Dacheng, Daqi, and others. Active during the late Ming and early Qing periods, Daosheng was a distinguished master of the Linji school. His thought harmonized Confucian and Buddhist teachings, responding to the social upheavals and Buddhist developments of his time. The contents of the recorded sayings encompass Chan teachings, instructional discourses, pointed dialogues, as well as poetry and prose, manifesting the Chan characteristics of directly pointing to the human mind and realizing one's inherent Buddha nature. This work is not only a significant document for studying late Ming Chan thought but also reflects the adaptation and transmission of Buddhism amidst historical change. It holds an important position in the history of Chinese Buddhism, particularly for research into the lineage of the Linji school.
