密雲禪師語錄序

Preface to the Recorded Sayings of Chan Master Miyun

Bodhidharma received the secret seal from Prajñātāra in the Western Heavens, and after six transmissions, it reached Caoxi. After Caoxi, the lineage split into two branches, with the descendants of Linji becoming especially prominent. After Linji, it divided again into two branches, and the descendants of Yangqi flourished uniquely. The monastery's abbot received a distant prophecy from Ciming, which aligned with Huangbo's prophecy for Linji, thus establishing the Zen path as the foremost under heaven. The Linji lineage transmitted today all descends from Yuanwu Qin's disciple, Huqiu Long. Huqiu Long's disciple, Tiantong Hua, possessed profound insight, and Dahui once composed a verse specifically praising him. Tiantong Hua transmitted to Tiantong Jie, who transmitted to Po'an Xian, who transmitted to Wuzhun Fan, who transmitted to Xueyan Qin, who transmitted to Gaofeng Miao, who transmitted to Zhongfeng Ben, who transmitted to Qianyan Chang, who transmitted to Wanfeng Wei, who transmitted to Baocang Chi, who transmitted to Dongming Chan, who transmitted to Haizhou Ci, who transmitted to Baofeng Xuan, who transmitted to Tianqi Rui, who transmitted to Juexue Cong, who transmitted to Yuexin Bao, who transmitted to Yumen Chuan. Yumen's direct disciple is the present-day Tiantong Yuanwu Master. Looking back, Master Yuanwu is the twentieth generation from Yuanwu Qin, the thirtieth from Linji, and the fortieth from Bodhidharma. Tiantong is located east of the great sea, surrounded by mountains and rivers. In its history, over eighty masters have sat on the Dharma seat and taught, most of whom were descendants of Linji. In the spring of Gengwu, while staying at a monastic retreat in Wulin, I happened upon a collection of the Master's recorded sayings and realized that the Linji tradition remains unbroken to this day. I wrote a letter of respect, inviting the Master to teach on Mount Taibai, the former site of Tiantong Hua. With the exchange of shouts and blows, students found no place to open their mouths, and all bowed before his presence, believing Linji had returned. The Master's conduct is stern and rigorous, embodying the style of ancient venerable masters. His practice and understanding are aligned, distinct from the wild Zen of later ages. I have witnessed his methods of guiding and checking, each word he utters encompassing heaven and earth, its origin truly extraordinary. Fulfilling Prajñātāra's prophecy, he has revived the Linji way in this era, fully upholding the true teaching and cutting off all directions of the world. How profound it is!

崇禎壬申歲三月朔旦弟子黃端伯稽首和南譔

In the third month of the Ren Shen year of the Chongzhen reign, on the first day of the lunar month, the disciple Huang Duanbo bows with reverence and composes this.
