If you do not plant parasol trees, no phoenix will come to rest; The roc’s flight, begun before thought, cannot be matched by force. Boundless and vast, covering the earth—not a single patch of soil remains; Of one color, level and sunk deep—this is only half the truth.
By the spring grass, the fleeing hare fades far away, Waiting by the stump, one sighs—white hairs burn gray. If you but show the hand that spreads the dragon’s might, Eighty-four thousand ways are not mere phoenix down—so light.
Clouds drift lazily over the ridges, streams race through the valleys, By the house corner, blossoms stretch, some short, some tall. A monk, well-fed, idly plays with his chopsticks— Yet, there’s no Dharma to discuss, no truth to share.
Lingyan ascended the hall and said, "The Dharma is no trivial matter. One who expounds the Dharma must possess six kinds of perfection: First, the perfection of establishment(Master's note: True and false share the same source; form and name have not yet appeared.), second, the perfection of the present moment(Master's note: Every dust has a path; not stuck in one direction.), third, the perfection of oneself(Master's note: Wash away all conditions; illuminate and stand alone.), fourth, the perfection of wisdom upon wisdom(Master's note: Unfolding and folding transcend opposition; illumination and function move together.), fifth, the perfection of root and branch(Master's note: The correct position now manifests; the great work leaves no trace of questioning.), sixth, the perfection of equality(Master's note: Merged and forgetful of traces; far beyond ordinary and sacred.). When these six are fully complete, each phenomenon returns to its source; if one is lacking, every word obscures the meaning. Those of sharp faculties naturally interweave the one and the six; beginners and those of shallow learning should beware of following fixed paths and worn tracks." He struck the staff(Master's note: From ancient times to now, this can be relied upon and trusted.) and descended from the seat.
Lingyan ascended the hall and said: "When facing a critical moment and taking control, there are altogether eight gates. To bring order out of chaos and achieve peace, one cannot be restricted to a single method. Sometimes strategies move in straight and unexpected patterns, sometimes through the interweaving of dark and light forces. The nine heavens above, the nine earths below—one dies, one lives. To capture bandits, seize their leader; to shoot a person, first shoot their horse. Therefore, victory is decided at the moment of encounter. A divine talisman's power lies in its transformation. Every gate has its path, every step a road. A hero who surpasses ordinary limits needs no pointing—he can naturally throw himself straight in. If not, Lingyan will open the eight gates for you."
He lifted his staff and said: "First, the gate of encompassing all in an instant(Master's comment: It fills all space, unbroken through past and present.). Second, the gate of host and guest establishing each other(Master's comment: Responding in harmony, yet few who recognize it.). Third, the gate of giving rise to Dharma from the situation(Master's comment: Marvelous response at the moment, entirely forgetting the pecking and cracking.). Fourth, the gate of granting and taking away freely(Master's comment: Giving and withholding interwoven, never falling into the ordinary.). Fifth, the gate of revealing opportunity and using it skillfully(Master's comment: Exchanging patterns and shifting lines, emerging too subtle to discern.). Sixth, the gate of fully raising the true command(Master's comment: The blades of the wheel turn together, killing and giving life both enacted.). Seventh, the gate of universally gathering all sense faculties(Master's comment: Different paths lead to the same end, without expending extra effort.). Eighth, the gate of peace with no signs(Master's comment: The transformative impulse leaves no trace, noble beyond all measure.)."
He struck the staff and said: "Which gate is this?" The assembly was speechless. He then descended from the seat, scattered them like a whirlwind, and returned to the abbot's quarters(Master's comment: The battle-scarred steed is no longer recognized; we must again speak of deeds that crown the age.).

Golden circles cast forth, the ultimate meaning of the Three Vehicles transcends words; Jade edicts proclaimed, all ten directions are clearly illumined. Not treading the path of conceptual thought, words blaze like thunderbolts in the sky; breaking through the barriers of emotion, the Path shines brighter than moonlight emerging from the sea. May all awakened ones together realize this teaching. The Mystic Seal is reverently inscribed.

Before a living being or a Buddha has taken form, how can they communicate? *(The master said: Block your nostrils.)*
Perfectly pure and unadorned, try giving it a name. *(The master said: Hold back your tongue.)*
Where the mind and consciousness cannot reach, is there another spark of life? *(The master said: It emerges suddenly—hard to discern.)*
Only when utterly free from the senses and their objects can one truly praise it. *(The master said: How could that involve elaborate words?)*
A single thread of connection opens sideways—then you may discuss it. *(The master said: Who among these knows the sound?)*
Now furling, now unfurling, free to open or conceal at will. *(The master said: Moving still blinds the eye.)*
Standing like a cliff ten thousand fathoms high, hard to approach or grasp. *(The master said: In this place, there is no path.)*
There are two branching roads; you must not be unaware of them. *(The master said: Who can tell the servant from the master?)*
Responding to things and adapting to circumstance, blazing on without interruption. *(The master said: This meaning must be clearly understood.)*
Mingling with all sense objects, yet not counted among them. *(The master said: It nearly stands alone.)*
Wearing fur and bearing horns, even the Buddha's eye cannot see through. *(The master said: Truly extraordinary!)*
Crossing paths in every direction, yet no single truth is established. *(The master said: This shows proper respect.)*
