Forty-Eight Vows

I bow to the Threefold Perfect Body, the ocean of all true suchness and awakened nature, praised as the Dharma Realm, equal to space, the great ocean of vows adorned in myriad ways.

Cause and effect interpenetrate, inconceivable, the ocean of all Bodhisattva practices. I also bow to Amitabha Buddha, Guanyin, Mahasthamaprapta, and Ksitigarbha.

For the boundless kindness of my compassionate parents, and out of pity for all beings in the realms, I give rise to a true and superior mind, and cultivate the supreme skillful means of Buddha-remembrance.

I deeply believe in the gateway of the Pure Land's embrace, its vast vows universally covering all. Precepts are the boat, Wisdom the rudder, skillful means the sail, the Buddha's power the wind.

Until the end of time, I will ferry sentient beings, never for a single thought abandoning the Five Turbidities. The oceans of the Buddhas' vows are like Indra's net, reflecting my own vows within them again and again.

My vow is also like a wish-fulfilling jewel king, gathering all the Buddhas' oceans of vows. The wheel of my vow spreads horizontally throughout the ten directions, and also extends vertically through the three times.

It is the vehicle for All-Wisdom, therefore I earnestly and wholeheartedly cultivate it.

First Vow: From the very beginning, I made this heartfelt wish—to repay the boundless kindness of my compassionate father, Zhong Zhifeng, who gave me life. By the power of the Three Jewels, may all my fathers from beginningless time be reborn in the Pure Land, swiftly attain Enlightenment, and may all who hear my name also repay their fathers' kindness.

Second Vow: I originally made this vow to repay the boundless kindness of my compassionate mother, Jin Dalian, who raised me. Through the power of the Three Jewels, may all my compassionate mothers from beginningless time be reborn in the Pure Land, swiftly attain enlightenment, and may all who hear my name also repay their mother’s kindness.

Third Vow: I will not enter Nirvana until I have guided all beings in the Dharma Realm to achieve Buddhahood.

Fourth Vow: May I completely sever all lustful thoughts and desires, both in body and mind, to the point where even the notion of severance itself disappears. May all who hear my name forever cut off the very root of lust.

Fifth Vow: May all my habits of killing and harming be utterly extinguished, so that those who hear my name may be filled everywhere with the power of compassion.

Sixth Vow: May my karma of ignorance, delusion, and slandering the Three Jewels be completely eradicated without remainder, and may all who hear my name come to have genuine faith in the Three Jewels.

Ninth Vow: In every life, may I never forget my original vow—to skillfully guide all beings in this age of fivefold impurity.

Tenth Vow: May I spread the true Dharma everywhere, free from all demonic obstacles.

The Eighteenth Vow: When any Buddha in the ten directions is about to enter Nirvana, I will urge and request them not to enter final extinction, but to remain in the world to benefit all sentient beings.

The Nineteenth Vow: All assemblies of the ocean-wide gathering acknowledge me as the Great Dharma Prince. The Buddha praised my merit, wisdom, compassion, and vow-power, declaring them no different from those of Avalokiteshvara and Ksitigarbha.

The thirty-second vow: With great compassion and skillful means, I manifest in all places where the Dharma is absent, where the Dharma has perished, and where the Dharma cannot be practiced.

In the heat, I will manifest as a cool breeze. In dangerous places, I will manifest as a bridge or a ferry. Whatever is needed, I will manifest it—whether it is something to wear, to eat, to lean on, or to walk upon—so that all may find peace and happiness, and awaken the mind of enlightenment.

In my forty-eighth vow, my physical form is the most supremely subtle and wondrous, adorned with as many major marks as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each of these marks possesses as many minor characteristics as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each of these characteristics radiates as many beams of light as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each beam of light manifests as many colors as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands, adorning the entire realm. They produce as many sounds as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands, proclaiming the wondrous Dharma. They emit as many fragrant flowers, food, drink, garments, and all necessities as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands, universally providing for all beings. They manifest as many transformation Buddhas as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands, teaching and guiding all beings. Each of these Buddhas is accompanied by as many transformation Bodhisattvas as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each of these Bodhisattvas possesses as many sublime adornments as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each adornment performs as many vast Buddha-deeds as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Each deed brings benefit to sentient beings in as many worlds as there are specks of dust in countless, indescribable Buddha-lands. Whoever witnesses even a single one of these Buddha-deeds will be able to see my subtle and wondrous physical form. Whoever sees my form will become equal to me and will swiftly attain Buddhahood.
