> Zhi Xu reflected: Born into an age where the Dharma is in decline, I have yet to encounter the true vehicle. My internal conditions are weak, and the external conditions are likewise meager. Demonic obstacles have repeatedly intruded, and my pure karma remains unachieved. Observing others and examining myself, I feel shame and alarm. Fortunately, I have encountered the supreme King of Sutras—the auspicious and wondrous Penitent Liturgy—and, more fortunately, pure and clear sangha members practicing according to the Dharma. Thus, with sincere resolve, I light incense as an offering. First, I offer to Shakyamuni Buddha, Akshobhya Buddha, and all other World-Honored Ones, wishing that together with all beings, we may swiftly arouse the Bodhi Mind and perpetuate the Buddha-seed. Second, I offer to the Great Vehicle Golden Light Ocean of the twelve divisions of scriptures, wishing that together with all beings, we may swiftly attain profound and vast wisdom and awaken to enter the Dharma-seas. Third, I offer to the Bodhisattva of Faith and Form, the Golden Light Bodhisattva, and all three-vehicle noble assemblies, wishing that together with all beings, we may swiftly realize and enter liberation and ascend together into the stream of Dharma. Fourth, I offer to the Brahma, Shakra, and Eight Classes of divine beings, making offerings to the Three Jewels, wishing that their might and spiritual power may increase, and that they protect and uphold pure conduct. Fifth, I offer to the foremost majestic Auspicious Great Heaven, making offerings to the Three Jewels, wishing that he may not break his original vow and reveal good fortune to me. Sixth through Eleventh, I offer to the following masters (listing six masters and their vows—omitted). Twelfth through Fourteenth, I offer on behalf of my gracious master to the Three Jewels, confessing the offenses of falsely claiming enlightenment, frivolously evaluating koans, falsely creating penitential liturgies, slandering and defaming prior sages, harming the community, and mistaking causes for their fruition. May all such offenses be completely eradicated. If some cannot be erased, may I bear them in their place, so that my present illness and suffering may swiftly heal. If my lifespan is inescapable, may I instead ascend to the Land of Peace and Nourishment. Fifteenth through Seventeenth, I offer on behalf of supporting novices (six named) and benefactors (three named) to the Three Jewels, together with practitioners and the assembly. Eighteenth through Twentieth, I offer on behalf of a certain Bhikshu, known friends (five laypeople named), and deceased friends (three named) to the Three Jewels (the wording of vows omitted). Twenty-first, I universally offer to the Three Jewels for the sake of all beings—those who see and hear, those who do not, and the infinite, endless beings of the ten directions and three times. May they all suddenly awaken to the Golden Light Ocean and eternally sever the wheel of affliction, karma, and suffering. I only ask that the Three Jewels witness and receive my sincerity. Again in all earnestness, I prostrate my entire body. I light three sticks of incense. First, I offer to the Three Jewels for a certain Bhikshu, wishing that his forbearance and strength be solid, and his great vows never slacken. Second, I offer for the monarch and people of the Land of the Dawn, wishing that they may always enjoy peace and abundance, and avoid separation, chaos, and famine, so that demons and heretics retreat and the true Dharma flourishes. Third, I offer for myself—may the Three Jewels show compassion for my ordinary folly and certainly grant compassion and protection. From now on, may my pure karma grow daily; may my old habits and afflictions be subdued and severed in each thought; may I escape the cycle of attachment and views; may I realize the realm of Stillness and Light; may I never depart from the Compassionate Father in any thought; may I constantly behold the Land of Bliss; and with all sentient beings, may we together attain perfect enlightenment.
