> Vanakkana Penitential Text <note place="inline">Dingchou Year</note>

> I take refuge in Vairocana, the Lord on the Lotus Throne, And the thousand-petaled Buddhas, the many billions of transformation bodies. I bow to the Sutra of Brahma's Net, the Storehouse of the Mind-Ground, And to Mahamayuri, the Radiant Wisdom of Mystic Illumination. I also pay homage to Amitabha, the King of Great Vows, Avalokiteshvara, Mahasthama, and the Ocean-like Assembly. And to my sacred Lord Kshitigarbha, the Compassionate Honored One, May you all mercifully rescue and deliver us.

> The Bodhisattva Precept-Holder Zhi Xu reflects deeply: The supreme \*Brahma Net Sutra\* has long been preserved in the Dragon Treasury. Although there are commentaries on the lower chapter, they are ancient, brief, and obscure, making it hard for people to grasp its profound meaning. The upper chapter has two early attempts at commentary, but both fall short of revealing its essence. As a result, the crucial path of cultivation and realization has remained confused for millennia. Through residual good karma from past lives, I was fortunate enough to encounter this sacred text. After repeatedly studying it in solitude, it felt as familiar as a long-lost treasure. Not daring to let my own clumsiness hold me back, I have compiled this combined commentary. With respect, I offer the flame of twenty-one incense sticks, dedicating the merit to the true vehicle. First, second, and third offerings: To the Three-In-One, Single-Body Vairocana Buddha; to the teaching, practice, and principle of the \*Brahma Net Mind Ground Sutra\*; to the Buddhas Xuantong, Huaguang, Huaguang King, and Great Wisdom Light; to Manjushri, Samantabhadra, Medicine King, Medicine Superior, Vajragarbha, Akashagarbha, Maitreya, Vajrapani, and all Bodhisattva Mahasattvas of the Brahma Net Ocean who dwell on the Ten Grounds of aspiration, nurturing, and vajra-like nobility. I pray that Zhi Xu, from beginningless time until now, may have all unwholesome karma of body, speech, and mind — including slander, wrong views, and all other offenses — completely erased. May all roots of virtue be made firm and unshakable. Fourth offering: To Amitabha Buddha of the Land of Ultimate Bliss, his land and retinue, and the two attending Bodhisattvas and their assemblies. I pray that Zhi Xu, upon discarding this illusory body, will be reborn in that Pure Land. May the lotus flower open and grant me vision of the Buddha, fulfilling the great wheel of my vows. Fifth offering: To the compassionate Kshitigarbha. I pray that Zhi Xu's great wisdom will open and shine, his great compassion will increase, that he will be free from afflictions, and will extensively liberate beings. May he eliminate all karmic obstructions and broadly take on the suffering of all beings. Sixth offering: To the Tripitaka of Lingfeng, praying for the swift and splendid adornment of the scriptures. Seventh and eighth offerings: On behalf of my parents and departed family members, as well as the departed for whom the request was made, I offer to the Three Jewels. I pray that, relying on these good causes, all of them will be reborn together in the Pure Land. Ninth offering: To my precept masters for ordination and the ten precepts, as well as to a certain Dharma friend and colleague <note place="inline">five people</note>. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that their offenses and defilements be erased, and that they may attain the lotus seat of the nine grades. Tenth offering: To both my worldly teachers — those holding wrong views and those holding right views. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that those with wrong views abandon them and avoid their retributive consequences, and that those with right views increase their proper faith and accomplish genuine cultivation. Eleventh offering: For the requesting bhikshu, Dao Fang. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that he may become a true and eternal model, a healing tree for this final age of Dharma. Twelfth and thirteenth offerings: For bhikshus <note place="inline">four people</note> and for certain shramaneras <note place="inline">seven listed by name</note>. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that their habitual tendencies be broken and that they develop an unyielding spiritual integrity. Fourteenth offering: For all beings who rejoice in and form karmic connections with this work. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that they deeply plant roots of virtue, which will forever serve as seeds for enlightenment, enabling them to escape the net of worldly entanglements and turn toward Bodhi. Fifteenth through seventeenth offerings: For the Bodhisattva Precept-holding upasakas <note place="inline">two people</note> and certain laypeople <note place="inline">seven listed by name</note>. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that they may transform the wrong views of their parents and relatives, and that they may remove the harmful intentions of thieves, traitors, and villains. Eighteenth offering: For all beings throughout space and the Dharma Realm who have ever received the Bodhisattva precepts. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that their precept-holdings may be firm and strong, that they may commit no offense, even subtle ones, that the concentration-based precepts and path-based precepts may manifest together, and that the precepts for accumulating virtue and benefiting beings may be perfectly realized. May they progress through the thirty minds, attain the level of the Essential Nature, quickly realize perfect enlightenment, and fully accomplish the Dharmakaya. Nineteenth offering: For all beings throughout space and the Dharma Realm who have received the Bodhisattva precepts but have violated them. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that their karmic obstructions be eliminated, their precept-holdings be purified once more, and that all transgressions — whether heavy or light, intentional or accidental — be completely removed. Twentieth offering: For all sentient beings in the Dharma Realm who, though they have not yet received the precepts, have heard the name of the \*Brahma Net Sutra\*. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that, through the power of these good conditions, they may all awaken, resolve to receive the precepts, and cultivate according to the Dharma. Twenty-first offering: For all sentient beings in the Dharma Realm who, though they inherently possess the true and eternal Buddha-nature of the \*Brahma Net\*, have never even heard its name. I offer to the Three Jewels, praying that through the power of great compassion, the power of inconceivability, and the true and awesome power of the same Dharmata, they may, from this moment onward, all come to hear this sublime Dharma gate. May they develop right faith and understanding, escape the three evil realms, transcend the eight difficult states, and decisively ascend to the stage of receiving the precepts. May they all engage in genuine cultivation, and in turn guide and inspire others, until all together realize Bodhi. For those beings who are entangled by evil obstacles and cannot free themselves, who are deluded and confused and incapable of awakening, I pray to the Three Jewels: through your supreme, vast virtue; through the power of wisdom and compassion; through the boundless vow-power of Amitabha Buddha; and through the fierce, courageous vow-power of Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva, may they quickly awaken and be completely rescued from the wheel of suffering. If their fixed karma must inevitably be recompensed, then may Zhi Xu be reborn swiftly in the Pure Land. Riding the wheel of his vows, may he, throughout the ten directions, in inexpressibly many world-systems and in the Avichi hells, undergo suffering in their place, so that those beings may realize Bodhi first. Even if only a single being in the entire Dharma Realm had not yet attained enlightenment, Zhi Xu would willingly abide in measureless hells to undergo their pain in their stead. Throughout all eons, he would never tire or be wearied. The vows I make today are identical to those made by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of past, present, and future. They are blessings empowered by all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If my beginningless evil karma should cause me to fall into great suffering, my consciousness deluded and my mind forgetful of this great resolve, vow, and practice established today, I look up to the compassionate father Vairocana, the original teacher Shakyamuni, the Amitabha King of Vows, and the compassionate mother Kshitigarbha. Have mercy on me, protect me, and awaken me. May I, even amidst suffering, recall this original vow, and not abandon suffering, but instead use it to liberate beings. Furthermore, I pray that, through the merit and conditions of this act of offering incense and making vows, the True Dharma may shine once more in Jambudvipa, and the wind of wrong views may completely cease throughout worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. May those who uphold the precepts clearly understand what is allowable and what is forbidden. May those who study the teachings deeply grasp the principles, realizing the nature of phenomena and their cultivation. May those who practice \*dhyana\* expand their understanding of the mind's source, never falling into demonic paths. May those who recite the Buddha's name perfectly integrate practice and principle, realizing that self and other are not separate. I further vow that all Dharma gates may be understood by everyone, that there may never again be the fault of stubborn contentiousness. May all attachment to sectarian boundaries be completely dissolved. In every moment, may the mind-lamp of the patriarchs be sustained. In every Dharma, may the essential nature of the \*Brahma Net\* be realized. May all beings, sentient and insentient alike, together perfect the wisdom of all modes.
