> The bodhisattva precept-holder, a novice monk named Zhi Xu, places his complete trust in Shakyamuni, our compassionate father; the thousand Buddhas of the past, present, and future; and Amitabha, our guide to the Pure Land. I reverently turn to the \*Brahma Net Sutra\*, Bodhisattva Ground of Mind chapter; the \*Shurangama Sutra\*, which reveals the unconditioned nature and the perfect cultivation of all Bodhisattvas; the thousand-armed, thousand-eyed Great Compassionate Guanyin Bodhisattva; Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva; the pure ocean-like assembly of Bodhisattvas; the twenty-five perfect penetrations of the great Bodhisattvas; the great Arhats; Manjushri Bodhisattva; King of Vajra Treasury Bodhisattva; Kshitigarbha Bodhisattva; and the endless Three Jewels of the ten directions and three times. May you extend your compassionate light and look down with pity. I humbly pray for the deceased precept-holding monk Dao Fang. Though his correct mindfulness is clear and his rebirth in the Pure Land can be predicted, his merit and wisdom are not yet complete, and the time for his lotus flower to open is still uncertain. I sincerely invite fellow practitioners to join in bowing before three thousand Buddhas, respectfully offering six sticks of incense on our arms in homage to those Buddhas and to the Three Jewels across the universe. First, I dedicate the merit from this act of bowing to Dao Fang, praying that through the opening of his mind, he may in a single thought see all Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, and attain the teaching of never forgetting mindfulness. Second, I dedicate to Dao Fang the merit from my current commentary on the \*Shurangama Sutra\* and my earlier combined annotation of the \*Brahma Net Sutra\*, Bodhisattva Ground of Mind chapter. May all his beginningless offenses be completely dissolved, all wholesome roots be fully perfected, subtle attachments to love be severed, the habits of self-cherishing and anger be destroyed, the flood of arrogance be dammed, and the clouds of dark dullness be cleared. May his precept essence be fully accomplished, so that both his intrinsic and prohibitive karma become pure. May his meditative power be deep and stable, so that both drowsiness and restlessness vanish. May his wisdom nature be bright and open, so that both relative and ultimate wisdom shine together. May his mind-protecting skill be masterful, so that he regards the unlearned and the learned with equal vision. May he receive his prophecy of enlightenment within a single lifetime, and may his lotus flower open without delaying even one thought. Third, I combine the above merits and, in the name of Dao Fang, dedicate them to all enlightened spirits. May they all be reborn together in the Pure Land. Fourth, on behalf of his filial disciples, I prostrate to the Three Jewels, praying that they may forever be free from conflict and discord, and never violate the precept against being a lion-worm. Fifth, on behalf of all the faithful donors of the Clear Serenity Monastery, I prostrate to the Three Jewels, praying that they may regard those who have shaved their heads as their teachers, those who wear dyed robes as sages and saints, and even all young novices and all who ever set foot in the monastery grounds as future Buddhas, earnestly following the strict instructions of the Ten Wheels and forever acting as a fortress for the Three Jewels. Sixth, I extend Dao Fang's gratitude to his fellow practitioners. May they, through repentance, suddenly realize the essence beyond all faults, and through liberating others, secretly awaken to the principle without self or other. I reverently call upon the holy sages of this world and the Pure Land to witness this and grant their acceptance.
