> The Tathagata appears in the world only for the sake of the One Vehicle. Because the capacities of sentient beings are not the same, he skillfully teaches the Three Vehicles as an expedient. Although he speaks of the Three, their ultimate goal is to return to the One. Fearing that beings would not believe and would sink in suffering, he must discern their readiness. Fearing that they would grasp the Three Vehicles as ultimate reality, he says there is "no high or low." All the various illnesses of sentient beings are but one illness—the failure to recognize their Buddha-nature. All the various medicines of the Tathagata are originally one medicine—the ultimate teaching of the One Buddha Vehicle. However, since beings have been ill for so long, their symptoms have changed in many ways. So the King of Physicians must apply the medicine according to the specific circumstances. His original intent is to cure the illness and then remove the medicine. The medicine is given to match the illness—this is the gate of skillful wisdom. Only by understanding the Tathagata's original purpose can we attain the wonderful function of helping beings in the latter age. For those whose seeds are to be planted, it is permissible to forcefully administer the Great Vehicle. For those whose maturity is to be ripened, it is permissible to skillfully teach the Three Vehicles. If the essential distinction between expedient and ultimate is not clear, if the meaning of "siddhanta" (accomplished teachings) is not fully understood, then even speaking of the Three Vehicles according to beings' capacity becomes false discrimination—and even the single flavor of the Dharma becomes vague and confused. Thus, the two meanings contained in the six types of scriptures perfectly complement each other. Regarding the "five aggregates" (skandhas) and the "twelve links of dependent origination": "Skandha" means accumulation and covering. They are divided into four mental aggregates, which together with form make five. The single link of "name-and-form" already contains them all. How can one arrange the twelve links in sequence and then argue that they contradict this? The twelve links explain the cycle of cause and effect across three lifetimes. What is capable of producing a result is called "cause", and what mutually supports is called "condition". Therefore, the aggregates correspond to the truth of suffering, while the links encompass both the truths of suffering and its origin. The aggregates are explained horizontally; the links, vertically. Beginning from ignorance and ending with old age and death, each link contains all five aggregates. Without relying on the five aggregates, how could there be ignorance? How could there be any volitional formations? Birth is nothing but the illusory union of the five aggregates. Old age is their illusory transformation. Death is their illusory disintegration.
