### 荅人問參究初心方便說

> Answering a Question on the Beginner's Expedient Means for Investigation

向上一機，自有祖庭正令，不落方便。既曲為中下，設方便門，有一病，隨有一藥，病既萬端，藥亦千變。良醫合宜而用，砒霜活人；庸醫昧機而施，醍醐傷命。立一法必伏一獘，有一利必具一害。棒喝機鋒，提持公案，皆藥也，亦皆病也，未可軒輊，亦未可決定執為初心方便。如人行路，不與導師同程，莫若博問路徑。不然，惜一時之躊躇，貽歷年之錯誤，入鬼國，墮深坑，遇蠱毒，逢劫賊，敢保十箇五雙有分在。

> For those of the highest capacity, there is the direct, true teaching of the ancestral tradition—no need for any expedient methods. But out of compassion for those of average or lesser ability, we create convenient gateways. For every ailment, there is a specific remedy; just as sicknesses are countless, so too are cures endlessly varied. A skilled physician prescribes wisely—even arsenic can save a life. An incompetent doctor, however, uses treatments blindly, and even the finest elixir can be deadly. Every method carries a hidden flaw; every advantage brings a corresponding danger. Sticks and shouts, sudden insights, and case studies (gōng'àn) are all remedies—but they can also become ailments. None is inherently superior, nor can any be prescribed as a fixed, beginner-friendly expedient. Imagine a traveler: if you cannot keep pace with your guide, it is better to ask around for the right path. Otherwise, a moment's hesitation may lead to years of error—you could end up in a land of demons, fall into a deep pit, encounter poison, or be ambushed by bandits. I can guarantee that many, perhaps even most, will meet such a fate.
