> Teaching the Dharma

> Breaking precepts is evil, but hiding them is even worse. Being without faults is good, but correcting them is even better. The path of correction is the universal gateway through which all Buddhas of the past, present, and future realize enlightenment. Therefore, the five methods of repentance are used by everyone—from ordinary beings to those at the highest stages—as a means to progress. The danger of regret lies in hesitation; the power to avoid calamity lies in genuine remorse. Fortune and misfortune have no fixed door; they are summoned by each person alone. When people commit wrongdoing, it is a grave evil, yet they feel no shame. But when they openly confess their faults—an act of supreme goodness—they instead feel embarrassed. They prefer evil and shrink from goodness, thus becoming the worst of the worst, with no hope of escape. No delusion is greater than this. Confessing before others not only warns those who have not yet transgressed but also deepens the shame of those who have. It may inspire others to repent as well: those who aspire to goodness increase their virtuous roots, and even those who mock will plant seeds for future awakening. Moreover, it helps dissolve my past karma and serves as a warning for my future conduct. The Tathāgata’s teachings are infallible. Those who reject the Buddha’s words are not His disciples. If one can repent after committing an offense, that person is a courageous individual—worthy of respect and awe. This single thought of brave correction is the direct cause of Buddhahood. Without genuine faith and deep good roots, one cannot share this practice with the world. All who can do so are worthy of eternal remembrance, like the Bhikṣu Brave Giving. Join your palms and recite this verse.

> The nature of transgression is originally unborn— Why then conceal it? To conceal makes it real. If you do not conceal, transgression is empty. Ah, those who lack shame, Using the view of ultimate reality as an excuse— If they cannot even follow the methods, How could they realize the principle of no-birth? If one truly understands no-birth, The form of transgression is itself ultimate reality. Since transgression is already ultimate reality, There is nothing left to conceal. It is like one who, seeking medicine for illness, Acquires the elixir of immortality— Their body becomes light, they soar aloft, Surpassing ordinary, healthy folk. Do not abandon the method of confession And yet enter the principle of no-birth. What comes later incorporates what came before, And what came before also connects to what follows. Be as careful at the end as at the beginning, And deeply penetrate all conditioned origination. Deceive not the Three Jewels Nor the Dharma-protecting gods and dragons. With this sincere, true heart, Save yourself and transform others. Dedicate the merit to the Land of Peace— This is called the Great Vehicle Path.
