> Miao'an Speaks

> The three realms offer no safety; they are like a burning house. Only those who enter the samadhi of the fire of light can transform the flames of affliction and karma into the fire of wisdom. Within it, they play and move freely, without obstacle, and this is called sublime peace. The fire of affliction and the fire of wisdom are one in essence, with different names. It is not that affliction is extinguished and wisdom arises, for when there is no wisdom, affliction can never be eliminated. Nor is it that wisdom arises and affliction is extinguished, for when wisdom is present, affliction has already departed. Just as darkness has no light, and light has no darkness—darkness does not block light, nor does light destroy darkness. These two states never meet, because both darkness and light are formless, sharing emptiness as their essence. Likewise, wisdom and affliction are formless, sharing the nature of mind as their essence. Consider fire: when it burns dung, its stench is oppressive; when it burns sandalwood, its fragrance spreads far. The nature of mind is similar: attached to profit, it becomes the three lower realms; attached to fame, it becomes the realm of asuras; attached to the five virtues and ten good deeds, it becomes the human and heavenly realms of desire; attached to the four dhyanas and four formless attainments, it becomes the form and formless realms; attached to the selfless truth of liberation, it becomes the hearer and solitary realizer; attached to the six perfections and myriad practices benefiting self and others, it becomes the bodhisattva; attached to ultimate reality, it is called buddhahood. Though the mind, following conditions, manifests the ten realms, its nature is still beyond the ten realms—just as fire, depending on conditions, has fragrance or stench, but its nature is neither fragrant nor foul. Outside the ten realms, there is no separate mind; yet each realm’s mind also encompasses the ten realms—just as outside fragrant or foul plants, there is no separate fire essence, yet each plant’s fire-seed can still burn all other plants. In the Lotus Sutra, the three vehicles, humans, gods, the dragon girl, and even icchantikas—none are left without a prophecy of buddhahood. Because the fire of all plants shares one fire-nature. To know that one fire is all fires, and all fires are one fire—this is not to seek the fire of wisdom apart from the fire of affliction; not to seek the fire of spiritual powers and samadhi apart from the fire of karma; not to seek the true fire of dharma-nature apart from the fire of karmic retribution. Even worldly intelligence is placed within the buddhadharma. This is called transforming the fire of affliction into the fire of wisdom. Use the hand that pushes others to support them; use the mouth that slanders others to praise them; use the heart that resents others to love and show compassion. This is called transforming the fire of karma into the fire of liberation. Know that this body, mind, and world are entirely mind-only. Without creating various emotional attachments of self and other, then boiling cauldrons, fiery pits, forests of swords, and mountains of blades all become a monk’s joyful samadhi. How much more are the minor adversities and hostile conditions of the human world—how could they not be tools for polishing one’s true nature? This is called transforming the fire of suffering into the fire of the dharma-body. This is called the samadhi of the fire of light. A verse says:

> When deluded, wondrous Dharmas become birth and death; When awakened, the myriad dharmas are serene by nature. Serenity is not the same as falling into emptiness; Birth and death have never had a real substance. Skilfully adapting to needs, we speak of delusion and awakening; Opening the temporary, revealing the ultimate, delusion and awakening cease. When deluded thoughts are gone, awakening has nowhere to rest; The names "temporary" and "ultimate" also have no place. Neither temporary nor ultimate is the true nature of dharmas— The nature of mind, Buddhas, and sentient beings is not different. Based on this, we establish the gateway of temporary and ultimate, And the inconceivable principle of root and trace. It is like the lotus flower blooming and bearing fruit at the same time; Its four subtle attributes have no distinction either. Yet we say the blossom is the cause and the lotus fruit is the result, And that the fruit again gives rise to cause, inexhaustibly. If a person recognizes the mind-lotus, It always abides in the three realms yet is not confined by them. Then they can forever turn this sutra— Hundreds of thousands of millions of countless scrolls. The introduction, main body, dissemination, and encouragement—all of it— In a single snap of the fingers, this merit is fully complete.
