> Master Chian's Discourse

> Shame is the mind's ear. The essence of the mind is called sagehood, and the sage is nothing more than one who possesses shame. Wealth and honor are what ordinary people crave, but the heroic are ashamed of them. Fame and achievement are what the heroic pride themselves on, but the sage is ashamed of them. When shame reaches the level of the sages and worthies, it does not increase with great success nor diminish in humble circumstances. They can use the Way to aid the world—Yu, Ji, and Yanzi would have been the same if their positions were exchanged. This is how one conducts oneself with shame in the worldly realm. The path beyond the world is no different. The five desires of humans and gods, the meditative states of form and formlessness—these are what ordinary beings and outsiders crave, but the sages of the Three Vehicles are ashamed of them. The partial truth of Nirvana is what the Two Vehicles esteem, but the great bodhisattvas are ashamed of it. The supernatural powers beyond illusion are what bodhisattvas revere, but practitioners of the perfect and sudden path are ashamed of them. Thus, among both worldly and transcendental paths, none possess greater shame than practitioners of the perfect and sudden path. In the stage of names, one is ashamed of not yet attaining the five grades. In the stage of contemplation, one is ashamed of not yet purifying the six senses. In the stage of resemblance, one is ashamed of not yet realizing the Dharma-nature. In the stage of partial truth, one is ashamed of not yet fulfilling the original essence. Thus, one swiftly ascends to the wondrous enlightenment, yet without perceiving one's own achievement. How great is the role of shame in humanity! Truly, it is so.
