### 山客問荅病起偶書

> A Mountain Dweller Asks About Illness: Written by Chance

靈峰有五美四惡。何謂五美？一者泉甘且多，二者黜陟不聞，三者暑不酷，四者寒燒柴火，五者蚊少。何謂四惡？一者病時醫藥難，二者貧時借貸難，三者大風能飄瓦，四者地瘠多砂，所生穀菜味皆劣。客曰：「敢問四惡亦可屏乎？」山曰：「可。」客曰：「請聞厥方。」山曰：「節口腹，慎寒暑，則少病，斯屏醫藥矣。少欲知足，則不貧，斯屏借貸矣。緊覆茅，泥治壁，糊窗閉戶，斯屏風矣。依佛教戒，於美惡食，勿妄分別，趣療形枯，斯屏劣味矣。」客拜曰：「善哉受教，請畢世依君住。」

> Spirit Peak has five beauties and four drawbacks. What are the five beauties? First, the spring water is abundant and sweet. Second, there is no news of promotions or demotions. Third, the summer is not scorching. Fourth, firewood is used for warmth in winter. Fifth, there are few mosquitoes. What are the four drawbacks? First, medical treatment is hard to come by when ill. Second, borrowing money is difficult when poor. Third, strong winds can blow off roof tiles. Fourth, the soil is poor and sandy, so the grains and vegetables grown there have an inferior taste. A visitor asked, "May I ask if the four drawbacks can be eliminated?" The mountain replied, "They can." The visitor said, "Please tell me the method." The mountain said, "Control your appetite and be careful with heat and cold, then you will rarely fall ill—this eliminates the need for medical treatment. Be content with few desires, then you will not be poor—this eliminates the need for borrowing. Firmly cover the thatch, plaster the walls, paste the windows, and seal the doors—this eliminates the problem of wind. Follow the Buddha's precepts, do not discriminate between good and bad food, and simply eat to sustain the body—this eliminates the problem of inferior taste." The visitor bowed and said, "Excellent! I take your advice. Please let me live with you for the rest of my life."
