> Chapter 5: The Eighteen Verses Sutra

> Seven Nine Six

徧住己見為第一 自於世間為最上此外一切皆為劣 故為諍論無越離

> Those who cling to their own views as supreme, And see themselves as the highest in the world, Look down on all others as inferior— Thus they never escape from argument and strife.

> Seven hundred ninety-seven.

一切自己見聞戒 彼修其見有功德只於其處彼執取 見他一切為賤劣

> All that one sees, hears, and practices— they believe their own views hold merit. Firmly grasping only their own position, they regard all others as inferior.

> Seven Nine Eight

見他為劣執著者 言彼有縛善巧者彼之見聞覺戒行 比丘不可作依著

> Seeing others as inferior, clinging to views, One who claims to be skilled in liberation— Their seeing, hearing, feeling, or conduct Should not be clung to by a monk.

> Seven hundred ninety-nine.

無論依智依戒行 不可營見於世間不見自己相等他 不可思為勝與劣

> Whether one acts through wisdom or through discipline, one should not seek recognition in the world. When you do not see yourself as equal to others, you should not think in terms of superior or inferior.

> Eight Hundred

捨斷自己無取著 彼對智亦無堅執於異諍中不違和 除諸惡見不復還

> Letting go of self, without grasping, They do not cling even to wisdom. In disputes, they do not stir up discord; Abandoning all wrong views, they do not turn back.

於諸兩邊對諸有 此界他界無願求確知諸法無取著 彼無任何之住著

> Regarding both extremes of existence, In this world or the next, they have no desire. Fully understanding that all phenomena cannot be grasped, They dwell without any attachment.

> Eight hundred and two.

彼對如此見聞覺 毫無徧計諸微想彼婆羅門無取見 故何於世妄分別

> Regarding what is seen, heard, or perceived, he harbors no subtle notions or discriminations. That Brahmin clings to no views, so why would he engage in worldly delusions?

彼對諸法無執取 諸法惡見不認受不為勤戒之所導 登斯彼岸不復還

> He does not cling to phenomena, nor does he accept distorted views about them. Not driven by rigid practice, he reaches the far shore and does not return.
