僧請益德山托缽話，師拈杖約退。僧再進，師曰：「我恁麼泥水，自合喫一頓了。」僧曰：「豈無方便？」師便打。僧曰：「某甲話也未問，因甚便打？」師曰：「汝作如是會耶？」隨後又打。僧禮拜，師曰：「聽取一頌：

> A monk sought instruction from Deshan regarding the teaching of holding the bowl. The master raised his staff and motioned for the monk to step back. The monk stepped forward again. The master said, "In this muddy water of mine, I deserve a beating myself." The monk asked, "Is there no expedient means?" The master then struck him. The monk said, "I haven't even asked a question yet. Why strike me?" The master replied, "Do you understand it that way?" Then he struck him again. The monk bowed. The master said, "Listen to this verse:"

「太阿冷處逼人寒，潦倒嵒頭把事探，若向三年尋活計，白雲依舊覆青山。」

> "At the coldest point, the great sword's chill bites deep; Old Yantou, at his wit's end, still probes for something. If you search three years to find a living way, White clouds will still cover the green hills."
