### （二六）人効王眼瞤喻

> (26) The Man Who Imitated the King's Blinking Eye

昔有一人，欲得王意，問餘人言：「云何得之？」有人語言：「若欲得王意者，王之形相汝當効之。」此人即便後至王所，見王眼瞤便効王瞤。王問之言：「汝為病耶？為著風耶？何以眼瞤？」其人答王：「我不病眼，亦不著風，欲得王意，見王眼瞤故効王也。」王聞是語即大瞋恚，即便使人種種加害擯令出國。世人亦爾，於佛法王欲得親近，求其善法以自增長。既得親近，不解如來法王為眾生故，種種方便現其闕短，或聞其法見有字句不正，便生譏毀，効其不是。由是之故，於佛法中永失其善墮於三惡，如彼効王，亦復如是。

> Once upon a time, there was a man who wanted to win the king's favor. He asked someone else, "How can I achieve this?" The other person said, "If you want to gain the king's approval, you should imitate his appearance and mannerisms." So the man went to the palace, and when he saw the king blinking his eyes, he immediately imitated the king's blinking. The king asked him, "Are you ill? Do you have an eye problem? Why are you blinking like that?" The man replied, "I am not ill, nor do I have any eye problem. I simply wanted to gain your favor, and when I saw you blink, I imitated you." Hearing this, the king became furious. He ordered the man to be punished in various ways and banished from the country. This is just like the way people behave in this world. They wish to draw close to the King of the Dharma (the Buddha) and learn his excellent teachings in order to improve themselves. Yet, when they do get close, they fail to understand that the Buddha, out of compassion for all beings, skillfully adapts his methods and may even appear to have imperfections — like minor flaws in wording or phrasing in his teachings. Instead of appreciating this, they criticize and mock, imitating what they mistakenly think are his shortcomings. As a result, they forever lose the goodness of the Dharma and fall into the three lower realms of existence. This is just like the man who imitated the king.
