> The Lotus Sutra

> At that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, as numerous as the dust particles of a thousand worlds, who had arisen from the earth, all with one mind joined their palms before the Buddha. Gazing reverently at the Honored One’s countenance, they addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! After the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa, in whatever lands the World-Honored One’s manifested bodies dwell and wherever they enter parinirvāṇa, we shall extensively expound this sūtra. Why is this? We ourselves also wish to obtain this true and pure great Dharma, to uphold, recite, explain, copy, and make offerings to it.”

> At that time, the World-Honored One, before an immeasurable multitude of hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas who had long dwelt in the Sahā World, such as Mañjuśrī, and before all the bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, upāsikās, gods, dragons, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and all other beings—displayed his great supernatural power. He extended his broad, long tongue upward to the Brahma Heaven, and from all his pores he emitted countless, innumerable beams of colored light, universally illuminating all the worlds in the ten directions. All the buddhas seated on lion thrones beneath jeweled trees likewise extended their broad, long tongues and emitted immeasurable light. When Śākyamuni Buddha and the buddhas beneath the jeweled trees displayed their supernatural power, a full hundred thousand years passed before they withdrew the manifestation of their tongues. Then, simultaneously, they cleared their throats and snapped their fingers. These two sounds reached all the buddha worlds in the ten directions, and the earth trembled in six kinds of quakes. Through the buddhas’ supernatural power, all the beings there—gods, dragons, yakṣas, gandharvas, asuras, garuḍas, kiṃnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and others—beheld this Sahā World, with its immeasurable, boundless hundreds of thousands of millions of buddhas seated on lion thrones beneath jeweled trees. They also saw Śākyamuni Buddha together with Prabhūtaratna Tathāgata seated on lion thrones within the jeweled stūpa, and they beheld the immeasurable, boundless hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattva-mahāsattvas and the fourfold assembly reverently encircling Śākyamuni Buddha. Having witnessed this, they all rejoiced greatly, experiencing what they had never experienced before. Immediately, the gods in empty space cried out with loud voices, “Beyond here, past immeasurable, boundless hundreds of thousands of millions of asaṃkhyeya worlds, there is a land named Sahā. In it dwells a buddha named Śākyamuni, who is now expounding to the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas a Mahāyāna sūtra called the Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma, a teaching for bodhisattvas, guarded and kept in mind by the buddhas. You should rejoice wholeheartedly and also pay homage and make offerings to Śākyamuni Buddha.” Hearing the voice from empty space, all those beings pressed their palms together toward the Sahā World and spoke thus: “Homage to Śākyamuni Buddha! Homage to Śākyamuni Buddha!” With various flowers, incense, necklaces, banners, canopies, adornments for the body, precious jewels, and wondrous objects, they all scattered offerings from afar toward the Sahā World. The objects they scattered came from the ten directions like gathering clouds, transforming into a jeweled canopy that covered all the buddhas in this realm. At that time, the worlds of the ten directions became unobstructed and interconnected, like a single buddha land.

> At that time, the Buddha addressed the Bodhisattva-mahāsattva Superior Conduct and the great assembly: “Such is the spiritual power of all Buddhas—immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable. If, for the sake of entrusting this sutra, I were to employ this spiritual power to expound the merits of this sutra for immeasurable, boundless hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of asaṃkhyeya kalpas, I still could not exhaust them. To state the essence: all dharmas possessed by the Tathāgata, all sovereign spiritual powers of the Tathāgata, all secret treasuries of the Tathāgata, all profound matters of the Tathāgata—all are proclaimed, revealed, and expounded within this sutra. Therefore, after the Tathāgata’s parinirvāṇa, you should single-mindedly uphold, recite, explain, copy, and practice as taught. In any land, wherever there are those who uphold, recite, explain, copy, and practice as taught, wherever this sutra is housed—whether in a garden, a grove, beneath a tree, in a monastic dwelling, a layperson’s home, a palace hall, a mountain valley, or open wilderness—in that place a stūpa should be erected and offerings made. Why is this? You should know that such a place is a site of awakening. There, all Buddhas attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi; there, all Buddhas turn the wheel of the Dharma; there, all Buddhas enter parinirvāṇa.”

> At that time, the World-Honored One, wishing to restate this meaning, proclaimed in verse:

> The Buddhas, saviors of the world, abiding in great spiritual powers, for the delight of living beings, display immeasurable divine might: their tongue reaches to the Brahma heavens, their bodies emit countless rays of light; for those who seek the Buddha path, they manifest these rare and wondrous things. The Buddhas’ clearing of the throat, the sound of their snapping fingers, is heard throughout the ten directions, and the earth quakes in six ways. Because, after the Buddha’s nirvana, they can uphold this sutra, all Buddhas rejoice and display immeasurable divine might. Entrusting this sutra, they praise those who receive and uphold it; even for countless kalpas, they could never exhaust their praise. The merit of such a person is boundless and inexhaustible, like the ten directions’ empty sky, whose limits cannot be found. One who can uphold this sutra has thereby seen me, and also seen Prabhūtaratna Buddha, and all my manifested bodies, and sees me today teaching and transforming the bodhisattvas. One who can uphold this sutra causes me and my manifested bodies, and Prabhūtaratna Buddha in nirvana, all to rejoice. The present Buddhas of the ten directions, and those past and future as well, they see and make offerings to, and cause them all to rejoice. The secret essential dharma attained by all Buddhas seated on the bodhi seat— one who can uphold this sutra will before long attain it as well. One who can uphold this sutra regarding the meaning of all dharmas, their names and words, rejoices in explaining them without end, like the wind in the sky, unhindered by anything. After the Tathāgata’s nirvana, knowing the sutras spoken by the Buddha, their causes and sequences, they explain them in accord with the meaning, truly, like the light of sun and moon, able to dispel all darkness. Such a person walking in the world can dispel living beings’ darkness, teaching immeasurable bodhisattvas, causing them ultimately to abide in the One Vehicle. Therefore, those with wisdom, hearing of these benefits of merit, after my nirvana, should receive and uphold this sutra. Such a person, regarding the Buddha path, is assured and free from doubt.
