○衢州光孝百拙善登禪師
和州烏江閔氏子。住後僧問。世尊生下一手指天一手指地。云天上天下唯吾獨尊。意旨如何。師云。一人傳虗萬人傳實。僧云。有意氣時添意氣。不風流處也風流。師云讚歎也讚歎不及。僧云。只如雲門大師道。我當時若見一棒打殺與狗子喫。貴圖天下太平。畢竟具什麼眼目。師云腦後薦取。上堂。白日閙浩浩。夜後靜悄悄。長廊走波波。步步無欠少。不識主人翁。全身入荒草。撞著傅大士。問訊維摩老。臥疾毗耶城。幾箇知天曉。若是過量人。不向那邊討。為什麼如此。喝一喝云。下坡不走。快便難逢。頌香林因僧問如何是衲衣下事曰。香林臘月火燒山。冷淡家風退步看。鬧裏忽然輕踏著。方知日午打三更。
A monk from Min family in Wujiang, Hezhou. After he became abbot, a monk asked, "When the World-Honored One was born, he pointed to the sky with one hand and the earth with the other, saying, 'Above heaven and below heaven, I alone am the honored one.' What is the meaning of this?"
The master said, "One person spreads a rumor, ten thousand people spread the truth."
The monk said, "When there's spirit, add more spirit. Where there's no elegance, there's still elegance."
The master said, "Praise, praise, yet never quite reaches it."
The monk said, "What about Master Yunmen's saying, 'If I had seen him then, I would have struck him dead with one blow and fed him to the dogs, to bring peace to the world.' What kind of eye does he ultimately have?"
The master said, "Look behind your head."
The master gave a talk: "In the daytime, all is noisy and bustling. After night, all is quiet and still. In the long corridor, people walk hurriedly, step by step, lacking nothing. But if you don't recognize the master of the house, your whole body falls into the wild grass. If you bump into Layman Fu and ask after Vimalakirti — he lies sick in Vaisali city — how many people know it's nearly dawn? If you're someone who goes beyond, you won't search for it over there. Why is this so?"
He gave a shout and said, "If you don't run downhill when you can, you'll rarely get another chance."
Verse on Xianglin: When a monk asked, "What is the matter beneath the monk's robe?" Xianglin replied, "In the twelfth month, fire burns the mountain."
Cold and indifferent, the family style — step back and observe. If in the midst of noise you suddenly step lightly on it, only then will you know that at noon, the third watch is struck.
