> Master Anfen of Jianmen, Nanjian Prefecture

> In his youth, Shao Yu studied alongside Mu An at An Guo Monastery. Later, he relied on Lan An but had not yet achieved deep realization. He took leave to visit Master Da Hui at Jing Shan. While walking by the river, he looked up at the palace in the distance. Hearing the official announce, "The Minister is coming," he suddenly attained great awakening. He composed a verse: "For years this matter weighed upon my heart, Asking all directions, yet no eyes would open. At this moment, my very guts split apart— A single call by the river: the Minister comes." He immediately returned to West Chan Monastery. Lan An welcomed him and bestowed upon him the monastic robe. From then on, he did not confine himself to any fixed dwelling. Later, he resided in a hermitage at Sword Gate, and his teachings spread across the southern regions. Students flocked to him. His verses and gathas flowed effortlessly from his hand, more than a thousand in all, widely circulated in the world. He addressed the assembly: "This plot of land—you all, tell me, before heaven and earth were divided, where was it? To see through it directly is already to be dulled and placed. This senior monk has not been lacking for a while. If you still hesitate and ponder, how much more than ten thousand miles of white clouds separate you then?" Suddenly he picked up his staff and scattered the assembly. He addressed the assembly: "From the Buddhas above to all sentient beings below, their very lives are all in this mountain monk's hands. Examining this, there are countless transgressions. Is there anyone who can point them out?" He struck the ground with his staff once and said, "Every grievance has its source, every debt has its debtor." Then he looked left and right and said, "Since leaving the cave, I have met no rival. Where you can spare someone, spare them." He addressed the assembly: "Before the fifteenth day, all stars in the sky point north. After the fifteenth day, all waters under heaven flow east. Before and after both cast aside—each place's dialect sounds different." Then he counted on his fingers: "One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen. All of you, what day is today?" After a long pause, he said, "This shop sells its goods—not a penny of credit."
