Chapter 5: The Mirror-Faced King Sutra
Thus have I heard:
The Buddha was staying at the Jeta Grove in the Kingdom of Shravasti. When it was time for alms, the monks took their bowls and entered the city to seek food. They thought to themselves: "It is still very early to enter the city. Why don't we go to the hall of the non-Buddhist ascetics, exchange greetings with them, and then take our seats?"
At that time, those ascetics were quarreling among themselves, entangled in disputes that could not be resolved, slandering and resenting one another: "I understand this teaching—what do you understand? What I know is in accord with the Way; what do you know that accords with any path? My teaching and method can be relied upon and practiced; your teaching and method are hard to even approach. What should be spoken of first, you speak of last; what should be spoken of last, you speak of first. You preach much doctrine that is not true and is like a heavy burden you cannot lift. When I explain the meaning for you, you cannot understand it. You claim to know the Dharma, but in the end, you have nothing at all. What more can you oppose? You attack one another with your tongues as if with spears, and for every poison you receive, you repay with three."
The Buddha said: "These brahmins are not the only ones who have been lost in darkness for a single lifetime. In the distant past, there was a king in this land of Jambudvipa named Mirror-Face. At that time, he commanded his messengers: 'Go throughout my kingdom and bring all the blind people to my palace.' The messengers obeyed and brought all the blind to the palace, then reported to the king.
The king commanded his ministers, "Take this man and show him the elephants." The ministers then led him to the elephant stable and showed him each elephant one by one, telling him to touch them. Some touched the feet, some the tail, some the base of the tail, some the belly, some the sides, some the back, some the ears, some the head, some the tusks, and some the trunk. After showing him all the elephants, they brought him before the king.
The king asked them all, "Do you truly see the elephant?" They replied, "We all see it." The king said, "What is it like?" Among them, one who had touched the leg said, "Great king, the elephant is like a pillar." One who had touched the tail said, "It is like a broom." One who had touched the tail's base said, "It is like a staff." One who had touched the belly said, "It is like a jar." One who had touched the side said, "It is like a wall." One who had touched the back said, "It is like a high cliff." One who had touched the ear said, "It is like a large winnowing basket." One who had touched the head said, "It is like a mortar." One who had touched the tusk said, "It is like a horn." One who had touched the trunk said, "It is like a rope." Then, in front of the king, they argued over the elephant, each insisting, "It is exactly as I say."
At that time, the king spoke this verse:
