The Buddha Speaks the Supreme Foundation Sutra

Chapter 6: Praises

At that time, Ananda, hearing what the Buddha had said in the assembly, was filled with joy and exhilaration beyond anything experienced before. He rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet, and respectfully joined his palms. Gazing up at the Honored One’s countenance with a pure heart, he spoke a verse of praise:

"Among all beings of past, present, and future, The Tathagata is supreme, beyond compare. In matters of people and truth, he has no equal— Thus he is the equal of all.

All that should be subdued is forever eliminated; All that should be known is fully understood. He is wisdom itself, the highest of the high— Only the World-Honored One, none other.

He has power, no fear—this is the true word, For the Tathagata has power and fearlessness. The World-Honored One, with great ability, harms no one— This is a rare and wondrous thing.

With skillful means he transforms beings, Not with dangerous thoughts or intoxication. Beings, arrogant and self-important, The World-Honored One subdues and makes them let go.

If someone has power to overcome others, That is called worldly pride, a fault of speech. But if one points to the Tathagata as supreme, This word is utterly true, without error.

If someone asks reasoned questions, No one can make the Tathagata yield. The Tathagata is invincible, without flaw, Leading beings to the place of bliss.

Four kinds of purity, without fault— Because of this purity, he needs no protection. Endowed with four kinds of eloquence, he speaks without end, The taste of Dharma overflows, satisfying beings.

In all realms of truth, his wisdom is unobstructed; In all domains of mindfulness, there is no loss. He has great compassion for all beings, And in all worldly matters, his mind is unstained.

He fully understands the faculties, tendencies, and natures of all, And has mastered all methods of teaching. For each different type of affliction, He expounds various corresponding remedies.

The World-Honored One's teaching is supreme— Yet ordinary beings, meeting the Buddha, do not awaken, Shrouded by the darkness of ignorance. These are extremely difficult to save.

The World-Honored One's fame inspires thirst and longing; Seeing the Buddha brings endless joy. The Buddha's words can purify the mind; The Great Teacher's right teaching liberates from birth and death.

Praising the Buddha removes inauspiciousness; Remembering the Buddha brings constant joy. Seeking the Buddha gives rise to great wisdom; Understanding the Buddha leads to perfect enlightenment.

The Tathagata, through morality, is pure and stainless; The Tathagata, through concentration, is clear and calm. The Tathagata, through wisdom, is unmovable; The Tathagata's ocean of Dharma is filled with sweet dew.

Beings are asleep; the Buddha alone is awake. He looks upon all beings' natures and desires with omniscience. Beings are heedless; the Tathagata is not. He looks upon all beings with equal eyes.

The method to destroy the thief of bonds has been taught by the Buddha; The illusions of the demon king have been dispelled by the Buddha. He has shown that birth and death are faults; He has revealed the other shore, the place of fearlessness.

If there is a Dharma that can save beings, he makes them attain it, Just as the World-Honored One acts with great compassion. Even Devadatta was highest— To all beings, he gives enlightenment.

I cannot now see the right practice; Cultivating this to repay the World-Honored One's kindness. If someone has reached the state of no remainder, Even that person has not yet repaid the Buddha's kindness.

If someone can practice the Buddha's right path, That person merely practices self-benefit. The World-Honored One exhausted himself for beings— This supreme kindness—how can it be repaid?

The World-Honored One teaches the true Dharma, Enabling people to practice and teach others. If the Tathagata had not appeared in the world, Only suffering would oppress their bodies.

All worlds would be only evil paths; Only the great sound of crying would be heard. The suffering of the six realms is all the same, All caused by being entangled by afflictions.

The World-Honored One unties beings' knots, Long bound by great compassion. The World-Honored One is the supreme great field of merit. Those who practice the right path according to the Buddha—

As I see, good treasure is not lost; So too, doing evil deeds is the same. If one has a casual mind toward the Buddha, Such beings fall into a place of loss. If suddenly one harbors enmity toward the World-Honored One, One dwells forever in darkness—how can there be doubt?

Just as a great master knows himself, A similar master also knows himself. Others cannot know like this— I now bow to the Honored Ones of all directions.

All merit, wisdom, and powers, The Tathagata's manifestations and Dharma-body— Great compassion wishes beings to know— Therefore I now bow my head.

Wonderful form, fine fragrance, never tiring to behold— All marks complete, surpassing all forms. Blossoming in three periods, most lovely— Such a Buddha-flower, I bow to it.

The World-Honored One knows the supreme place, Escaping all dangers and difficulties. Without trace, without accumulation, without falsity— I now bow to the Two-Footed Honored One.

The World-Honored One washes away all stains, Dwelling in the waters of right Dharma's merit. From the beginning, pure inside and out— I now bow to the truly pure body.

The World-Honored One is fully endowed with the good Dharma, Always providing great benefit for beings. Spreading sweet dew to satisfy beings— I now bow to the one who benefits others.

The most revered person respected by the world— Even that person still reveres the Buddha. All evils cut off, goodness perfected— I now bow to the most supreme Honored One.

No means has he not learned, Out of compassion, wanting to rescue beings, To help them cross the dangers of birth and death— I now bow to the world's refuge.

I bow to the peerless, wonderful form body, I bow to the one who teaches the sweet dew Dharma, I bow to the pure, stainless wisdom, I bow to the forest of all merit."
