The Buddha Speaks the Supreme Foundation Sutra

Chapter 7: Entrustment

The Buddha said to Ananda, "You should uphold and practice this true Dharma."

At that time, Ananda knelt upright and said to the Buddha: "Now that I have heard this profound teaching from you, I have gained something unprecedented, and I receive and uphold it with the utmost respect. World-Honored One, what shall this sutra be called, and how shall we receive and uphold it?"

The Buddha said: "Ānanda, this sutra is called 'The Supreme Reliance,' also called 'The Unprecedented,' also called 'The Collection of Wholesome Dharmas,' also called 'The Practice of Purity,' also called 'The Ultimate Practice.' Ānanda, there are ten methods for upholding this sutra. What are these ten? First, copying it; second, making offerings to it; third, transmitting it; fourth, listening to it with attention; fifth, reciting it yourself; sixth, memorizing it; seventh, explaining it widely; eighth, chanting it; ninth, contemplating it; and tenth, putting it into practice. Ānanda, these ten methods enable one to uphold this sutra, and they yield a true accumulation of merit that is measureless and endless.

Ānanda, just as wherever the wish-fulfilling jewel resides, all treasures emerge, so too, wherever a person who upholds this sutra resides, all wholesome dharmas are realized. Ānanda, just as all forests, trees, and medicinal herbs depend on the earth to grow, so too, all wholesome dharmas depend on this sutra to increase and flourish. Ānanda, just as all wholesome dharmas—whether they have already arisen, are arising now, or will arise in the future—are encompassed by diligence, and diligence is the foremost, so too, whether this sutra teaches the Dharma for Hearers, the Dharma for Solitary Realizers, or the Dharma for Bodhisattvas, this sutra is the foremost of all that is taught.

Ānanda, just as when a Wheel-Turning King rules, the seven treasures always accompany him, so too, when this sutra exists in the world, the treasure of the Buddha, the treasure of the Dharma, and the treasure of the Saṅgha continue uninterrupted in their lineage. Ānanda, you may widely proclaim this sutra in turn to monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, and to gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, and non-humans. Why is this? It is so that all beings may plant wholesome roots directed toward the Tathāgata."

The Buddha having delivered this sutra, Ananda, the great bodhisattvas of the assembly, along with King Shakra, the Brahma gods, and the protective world deities, heard this rare and wonderful teaching. They were filled with joy, leaped up in delight, and with faith received it, vowing to practice accordingly.
